Christmas village in the border town of Givet, between artisanal chalets and festive entertainment
The Givet Christmas Market, also known as the Christmas Village, is a festive event held annually in December in the town center of Givet, a border town in the Ardennes region. For a weekend, wooden chalets host local artisans, creators, and producers offering gift ideas, handmade decorations, delicacies, and local Ardennes products. Children's entertainment, the presence of Santa Claus, an ice rink, musical parades, and illuminations complete this magical program. Admission is free.
Each year in December, the town of Givet, nestled at the tip of the Ardennes on the Belgian border, dons its festive attire to host its Christmas Market. Place Carnot, in the heart of the town center, transforms into a true Christmas Village with its wooden chalets decorated with fairy lights and fir trees. The warm atmosphere of this artisanal market contrasts with the crisp December air, creating a festive cocoon perfect for strolling in search of gifts and treats, between the town's ramparts and the banks of the Meuse river.
The Givet Christmas Market brings together a selection of artisans and creators from the region who present their work in the chalets: handmade jewelry, artisanal candles, pottery, Christmas decorations, wooden toys, knits, and textile creations. Local producers from the Ardennes complete the offering with their specialties: honeys, jams, gingerbreads, foie gras, charcuterie, artisanal beers, and chocolates. Each stand is an invitation to discover local know-how and regional flavors.
The Givet Christmas Market is not just about its chalets: a program of festive entertainment punctuates the weekend. A free ice rink is set up for the enjoyment of children and families. Santa Claus makes an appearance to welcome the little ones and receive their wishes. Musical parades and street performances liven up the market aisles, while the town center's illuminations create a magical atmosphere as night falls.
The spirit of the Givet Christmas Market is above all one of conviviality. Braseros (outdoor heaters) are placed on the square, around which visitors warm themselves while enjoying mulled wine, hot chocolate, or waffles. The food stalls offer seasonal specialties in a warm atmosphere. The market is also an opportunity for the people of Givet and neighboring towns, including Belgians from across the border, to gather and share a festive moment during Advent.
Givet is the northernmost municipality in the Ardennes department, nestled in a bend of the Meuse river, dominated by the majestic Fort Charlemont. Its border position gives it a unique identity, between French and Belgian influences. The Tour de France has passed through, the Onion Fair on November 11th attracts tens of thousands of visitors, and the Christmas Market adds to the festive calendar of this town of character that knows how to welcome and celebrate all year round.
