Christmas enchantment in the Alsatian potters' town
Every year in December, Soufflenheim, the famous Alsatian potters' town, hosts its Christmas Enchantment, an authentic Christmas market showcasing local crafts and Alsatian traditions. For a weekend, the market hall and the forecourt of the Socio-Cultural Center are adorned with festive decorations to welcome artisans, potters, and exhibitors. The visit of Saint Nicholas, the Festival of Light (Saint Lucy), and the parade of traditional Alsatian Christmas characters make this event an unmissable family gathering.
Soufflenheim, world-renowned for its traditional pottery with colorful patterns, offers a unique setting to celebrate Christmas. The potters' town, located in the heart of the Haguenau forest in northern Alsace, hosts its Christmas Enchantment every December, a human-sized Christmas market where local craftsmanship reigns supreme.
The Market Hall and the forecourt of the Socio-Cultural Center (CSC) host carefully selected exhibitors. You'll find, of course, the famous Soufflenheim pottery — kugelhopf molds, baeckeoffe terrines, tarte flambée dishes — but also artisans offering Christmas decorations, candles, wooden toys, textiles, and original creations. Stalls selling mulled wine, soup, pretzels, and other Alsatian Christmas delights warm up visitors in the festive atmosphere.
The highlight of the weekend is the Festival of Light, celebrated on Saturday from 3 PM to 8 PM. Also known as the feast of Saint Lucy or Hellegeischter in Alsatian, this traditional celebration of the return of light during the darkest period of the year is one of the most moving moments of Advent in Alsace. The village streets are illuminated by thousands of candles and lanterns in a solemn and magical atmosphere.
Saint Nicholas visits the children on Saturday, distributing sweets and mannalas (gingerbread men). On Sunday, a parade of traditional characters from Alsatian Christmas animates the streets: Christkindel (Baby Jesus), Hans Trapp (Alsatian Father Whipper), and other figures from local folklore parade before the amazed eyes of the children.
The Socio-Cultural Center offers creative workshops for children, an ice rink, and a Christmas tree decorating contest. These free or low-cost activities make the Soufflenheim Christmas market a particularly family-friendly event.
The Soufflenheim Christmas Enchantment 2025 will take place on December 13th and 14th in the potters' town. The program includes an artisanal Christmas market, the Festival of Light (Saint Lucy) on Saturday, the visit of Saint Nicholas, a parade of traditional Alsatian Christmas characters on Sunday, workshops for children, and an ice rink.
