Ancestral festival of bread from the communal oven in a village in the northern Alsatian Ried
The Fête du Pain et des Traditions de Leutenheim perpetuates in this village of the northern Alsatian Ried the age-old tradition of collective baking in the communal oven. Every year, local residents and associations relight the old communal oven to bake country breads, tarte flambées, and Kougelhopf using ancestral methods. This festival of village memory celebrates the gestures of yesteryear—hand kneading, wood-fired baking—in a warm and family-friendly atmosphere, with craft demonstrations, folk entertainment, and tastings.
Leutenheim, a small village in the northern Alsatian Ried on the banks of the Sauer, proudly preserves its rural traditions. The Fête du Pain et des Traditions is the most vibrant expression of this attachment to heritage: it brings the communal banal oven back to life, a witness to a time when collective bread baking was at the heart of village life.
The banal oven (Backofen) was once a seigniorial privilege: peasants had to bake their bread in it in exchange for a fee called "banalité". Over the centuries, these communal ovens became places of sociability, where the village women would gather to knead, bake, and chat. The Leutenheim festival revives this tradition:
Beyond bread, the festival celebrates all traditional Alsatian rural traditions:
Leutenheim is located in the Ried, this alluvial plain of the Rhine where preserved nature—wet meadows, Rhine forests, storks—coexists with authentic rural heritage. The festival is an opportunity to discover this little-known region, far from the tourist trails, and to share a moment of conviviality with the inhabitants.
The Fête du Pain et des Traditions de Leutenheim is expected in June 2026. Baking in the banal oven, entertainment, and local products are on the program.
