The Fête du Pain de Leutenheim: Living Memory of the Terroir
Leutenheim, a small village in the northern Alsatian Ried on the banks of the Sauer, proudly preserves its rural traditions. The Fête du Pain et des Traditions is the most vibrant expression of this attachment to heritage: it brings the communal banal oven back to life, a witness to a time when collective bread baking was at the heart of village life.
The Banal Oven: An Ancestral Heritage
The banal oven (Backofen) was once a seigniorial privilege: peasants had to bake their bread in it in exchange for a fee called "banalité". Over the centuries, these communal ovens became places of sociability, where the village women would gather to knead, bake, and chat. The Leutenheim festival revives this tradition:
- Lighting the oven in the early morning with beech wood
- Kneading the dough by hand according to recipes passed down through generations
- Wood-fired baking of country breads, Kougelhopf, and tarts
- Demonstrations by the village elders
Traditions Honored
Beyond bread, the festival celebrates all traditional Alsatian rural traditions:
- Tarte flambées baked in the banal oven
- Local specialties: farm-raised charcuterie, cheeses, jams
- Folk entertainment: traditional dances, Alsatian songs
- Rural crafts: basket weaving, pottery, wood carving
- Old games for children and exhibition of agricultural tools
A Preserved Village in the Ried
Leutenheim is located in the Ried, this alluvial plain of the Rhine where preserved nature—wet meadows, Rhine forests, storks—coexists with authentic rural heritage. The festival is an opportunity to discover this little-known region, far from the tourist trails, and to share a moment of conviviality with the inhabitants.
