An Authentic Christmas in France's Most Beautiful Village
Hunspach, voted France's Favorite Village in 2020 and listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in France, offers a unique setting for its Christmas festivities. This village in the Outre-Forêt region, in the far north of Alsace, is distinguished by its white half-timbered houses with black beams and hipped roofs, an atypical architecture that sets it apart from the colorful Alsatian villages of the south.
Living a Traditional Christmas
The main event, "Living a Traditional Christmas", takes place on the last weekend of November. The inner courtyards of traditional farms open their doors to visitors, hosting artisans and creators who present their original creations in an intimate and warm atmosphere:
- Handicrafts: ceramics, jewelry, candles, natural soaps, turned wood objects
- Textile creations: scarves, hats, accessories made of wool and felt
- Gourmet treats: bredele (small Alsatian Christmas cakes), gingerbread, jams, honeys
- Christmas decorations: Advent wreaths, handmade ornaments
Traditions and Activities
The market celebrates Alsatian Christmas traditions:
- Bredele workshop: making these small Christmas cakes emblematic of Alsace
- Hans Trapp and Christkindel: meet the iconic figures of Alsatian Christmas, the bogeyman and the Christ child
- Evenings: readings of Christmas tales and legends in the evening, by the fireside
- Christmas Concert: the Hunspach Harmony band gives a concert on Sunday at 5 PM in the Protestant church
The Christmas Window Trail
From the last weekend of November to January 6th, the Christmas Window Trail invites you on an enchanted walk through the village. Residents decorate their characteristic windows – these famous "Butzenscheiben" (blown glass pane) windows that are the architectural peculiarity of Hunspach – creating a luminous and poetic route. Free guided tours are offered on Saturdays at 4:30 PM (departing from the town hall square) and on Sundays at 6 PM (in front of the Protestant church).
An Exceptional Village in the Vosges du Nord Regional Natural Park
Located 30 minutes from Haguenau and an hour from Strasbourg, Hunspach is nestled in the Vosges du Nord Regional Natural Park. Its remarkably preserved architecture, traditional orchards, and rolling countryside make it a charming destination all year round, but the "Noël d'Antan" gives it a truly magical atmosphere.
