Alsatian authenticity at the foot of the Saints-Pierre-et-Paul Abbey Church
Each year from late November to late December, the wooden chalets of the Wissembourg Christmas Market are set up in the heart of the medieval town, around the imposing Saints-Pierre-et-Paul Abbey Church. Open on Fridays evenings, Saturdays, and Sundays of Advent, this authentic market showcases local artisans and their unique creations, Alsatian culinary specialties with the scent of spices, and family entertainment: creative workshops, shows, a visit from Saint Nicholas, and the spectacular parade of Hans Trapp and Christkindel to close the event. Committed to an eco-responsible approach at level 2.
Nestled in the far north of Alsace, on the Franco-German border, Wissembourg is a small town of art and history whose half-timbered houses, canals, and cobbled streets form a postcard-perfect setting. It is in this picturesque setting, around the majestic Saints-Pierre-et-Paul Abbey Church — one of the largest Gothic churches in Alsace — that the Christmas Market is held each year, a true concentrate of Alsatian authenticity far from the crowds of big cities.
The traditional wooden chalets host passionate artisans who present their unique creations: pottery, Christmas decorations, jewelry, textiles, handmade candles, and carved wooden objects. For flavors, visitors discover seasonal Alsatian specialties: bredele (small Christmas cakes), gingerbread, mulled wine, mannele (gingerbread men), and steaming regional dishes. The scents of spices and cinnamon fill the illuminated streets, creating a warm and intimate atmosphere.
The market offers a varied program of entertainment throughout the Advent period: creative workshops for children, shows, Advent concerts in the abbey church, a visit from Saint Nicholas, and encounters with traditional Alsatian characters. The highlight of the season is the spectacular night parade of Hans Trapp and Christkindel, a unique procession combining fire-eaters, drummers, and light magic, which closes the market on the last Sunday of Advent.
The Town of Wissembourg is committed to an eco-responsible approach recognized at level 2 of the eco-events charter in Alsace, confirming its desire to offer more sustainable festivities: reusable cups, selective sorting, short supply chains, and environmental awareness for visitors and exhibitors.
