The legendary nocturnal Christmas procession in Wissembourg
Every December, the medieval streets of Wissembourg ignite to the rhythm of drums and fire-eaters for the spectacular nocturnal parade of Hans Trapp and Christkindel. This Alsatian tradition features the terrifying Hans Trapp β a legendary figure inspired by the knight Hans von Trotha, dressed in black, armed with a stick and dragging chains and a sack β who sows terror before the saving arrival of Christkindel, the child Jesus of light, on his magical float. A pyrotechnic show and fireworks crown this unique procession in Alsace.
In the heart of Northern Alsace, the town of Wissembourg perpetuates one of the most spectacular and oldest Christmas traditions in the region. The nocturnal parade of Hans Trapp and Christkindel plunges thousands of spectators each year into a striking atmosphere, between shivers and wonder, in the illuminated alleys of the medieval city.
Hans Trapp (Hans von Trotha), a legendary figure from the 14th century, is the dark ancestor of Santa Claus in Northern Alsace. Accused by monks of having fraudulently acquired Berwartstein Castle, he allegedly flooded Wissembourg out of revenge. Popular tradition has made him a bogeyman dressed in black, with a thick beard, heavy boots, chains, and a large sack in which he carries disobedient children.
The parade begins in the late afternoon in the streets of the historic center of Wissembourg. To the sound of drums and the cries of brigands, the imposing Hans Trapp makes his entrance, accompanied by fire-eaters and masked figures in period costumes. On his cart, he threatens to take children who have not been good into the black forest, questioning the bravest about their behavior.
The atmosphere of terror is soon dispelled by the luminous arrival of Christkindel β the child Jesus in Alsatian tradition β on his magical float, surrounded by luminous angels. Christkindel brings light, gentleness, and treats, distributing rewards to well-behaved children. The contrast between the menacing darkness of Hans Trapp and the benevolent clarity of Christkindel creates a spectacle of unique dramatic intensity.
The procession concludes with a fire show and fireworks, a rare occurrence among Alsatian Christmas markets. This dazzling finale illuminates the half-timbered facades of the old town and beautifully closes Wissembourg's Christmas event season. The parade traditionally takes place on the last Sunday of the Christmas Market, attracting visitors from all over the region and neighboring Germany.
The Hans Trapp and Christkindel Parade embodies the cultural identity of Northern Alsace, a border territory where Germanic and French popular traditions have mingled for centuries. A free and open event for all, it brings together families, the curious, and folklore enthusiasts in a moment of intergenerational sharing, perpetuating a precious intangible heritage that Wissembourg has skillfully preserved and showcased.
