The great wine festival of Obernai in the heart of the Alsatian vineyard
Every autumn, Obernai celebrates the end of the grape harvest with a grand wine festival that is one of the most popular events on the Alsace Wine Route. For several days in mid-October, the picturesque market square and half-timbered streets come alive with processions in traditional costumes, brass bands, decorated floats, wine tastings, and folk dances. The festival culminates in a fireworks display illuminating the Kappelturm belfry, offering a striking visual spectacle.
Located at the foot of Mont Sainte-Odile, in the heart of the Alsatian vineyard, Obernai is a leading wine-producing town. The Fête des Vendanges celebrates the end of the harvest and the excellence of the local terroir every autumn, perpetuating a centuries-old tradition that links the town to vines and wine. It is an opportunity for Obernai's winegrowers to share their passion and expertise with the public.
The highlight of the festival is the grand procession that winds through the streets of the historic center. Dozens of participants parade in traditional Alsatian costumes (headdresses, aprons, embroidered vests), accompanied by brass bands, folk groups, and floats decorated in autumn colors. The streets lined with half-timbered houses provide a postcard-perfect backdrop for this colorful procession.
The Fête des Vendanges is above all a wine festival. The winegrowers of Obernai open their cellars and offer tastings of their wines—Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir—in a friendly atmosphere. On the market square, the traditional winegrowers' cauldron offers mulled wine with spices, a true signature of the festival. The winstubs serve choucroute, baeckeoffe, and Alsatian specialties accompanied by local wines.
The festival culminates in a spectacular fireworks display that illuminates the Obernai sky and the Kappelturm belfry, offering a grand finale to this harvest celebration. The autumn colors of the vineyard, the city lights, and the reflections of the fireworks create a striking tableau, a symbol of Alsatian generosity.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover the vineyard in its autumn colors. Guided walks through the hillsides allow visitors to admire the flamboyant landscapes and better understand the importance of the Alsatian terroir in wine production. A complete sensory discovery, combining nature, gastronomy, and traditions.
