About Ottrott New Wine

Every autumn, the wine village of Ottrott celebrates the tradition of new wine — the Neier Siasser — and honors its famous Rouge d'Ottrott, one of the rare red wines of Alsace. At the foot of the majestic Mont Sainte-Odile, the village winemakers open their cellars to share the first juices of the harvest, accompanied by fresh walnuts, farm charcuterie, and country bread. Tastings, vineyard walks, and conviviality make this festival a must-attend event of the Alsatian autumn.

The Rouge d'Ottrott: An Alsatian Wine Treasure

Ottrott, a charming village nestled on the slopes of Mont Sainte-Odile, is one of the rare terroirs in Alsace to produce red wine. The Rouge d'Ottrott, made from Pinot Noir grown on ideally exposed sandstone soils, is distinguished by its ruby color, red fruit aromas, and fine tannins. This exclusive wine, produced by a handful of passionate winemakers, is inseparable from the village's identity.

The Neier Siasser: The Tradition of New Wine

In Alsace, the tradition of Neier Siasser (“new sweet”) marks the end of the grape harvest. This grape must in the early stages of fermentation, both sweet and sparkling, is enjoyed in the weeks following the harvest, accompanied by:

  • Fresh walnuts from the garden
  • Farm charcuterie and artisanal sausages
  • Country bread with sourdough baked in a wood-fired oven
  • Fresh grapes and regional cheeses

The Ottrott New Wine Festival perpetuates this tradition with the village winemakers.

Meet the Winemakers

Ottrott's wineries — including Domaine Fritz-Schmitt, Domaine Vonville, and Vins Lutz — open their doors and cellars for guided tastings. It's a unique opportunity to discover Rouge d'Ottrott in its birthplace, discuss the secrets of this grape variety with the winemakers, and immerse yourself in the daily life of the vineyard.

An Exceptional Natural Setting

Dominated by Mont Sainte-Odile, a major pilgrimage site and a natural jewel of Alsace, Ottrott offers a magnificent setting with its terraced vineyards, its two medieval castles (Rathsamhausen and Lutzelbourg), and its Vosges forest. Vineyard walks are offered during the festival, with sensory stops to appreciate the terroir in all its aspects.
