The Kochersberg: The Beautiful Garden of Alsace
The Kochersberg is an agricultural region of exceptional richness, located west of Strasbourg. Its rolling hills and fields of wheat, hops, and tobacco have earned it the nickname "Beau Jardin" (Beautiful Garden) of Alsace. Truchtersheim, the cantonal capital, hosts the Fête du Kochersberg every summer, an event that celebrates this agricultural heritage and its accompanying traditions.
The Messti of Truchtersheim
At the heart of the festival is the Messti, the traditional Alsatian patron saint's festival. This annual event perpetuates age-old customs:
- Giant flea market with nearly 250 exhibitors in the village streets
- Vintage car exhibition in the alleyways
- Tastings by Alsatian gastronomic brotherhoods
- Children's games: ponies, carousels, inflatable structures from 9 am
- Folk music groups throughout the day
The Terroir in the Spotlight
The Fête du Kochersberg is an opportunity to discover the riches of the local terroir:
- Tarte flambées (Flammekueche) baked in a wood-fired oven — the Kochersberg is considered one of the cradles of this specialty
- Foie gras from the Gaveur du Kochersberg, a traditional breeding farm
- Asparagus, market garden produce, and farm cheeses
- Local beers and Alsatian wines
The Maison du Kochersberg
The Maison du Kochersberg, a cultural and associative center located in Truchtersheim, actively participates in the festival with exhibitions, workshops, and events that highlight the region's cultural heritage and traditions, from traditional headdresses to Schieweschlawe (throwing of flaming discs).
Terres en Fête
In conjunction with the Fête du Kochersberg, the event Terres en Fête, organized by the Young Farmers of the Truchtersheim canton, offers a large agricultural fair with plowing demonstrations, equipment exhibitions, and educational activities on agricultural professions.
