A Rich and Free Summer for All
Each summer, the City of Strasbourg orchestrates a summer season of remarkable scale. From early July to late August, Summer in Strasbourg unfolds a 100% free program that reaches all neighborhoods of the city, from the UNESCO World Heritage Grande Île to peripheral districts like Hautepierre, Koenigshoffen, or Port du Rhin. The stated ambition is territorial equity and access to culture for all.
Cathedral Illuminations
A flagship event of the Strasbourg summer, the Notre-Dame Cathedral Illuminations transform the western facade into a luminous and sound spectacle every evening. Created by lighting designer Daniel Knipper, this free show blends nature, art, and light in a staging that reveals the invisible details of this World Heritage monument during the day. The illuminations take place from 10:30 PM to midnight throughout the summer, on the Place du Château.
Der Wald – La Forêt: An Immersive Experience
At the foot of the cathedral, the Place du Château hosts Der Wald – La Forêt – The Forest, an immersive forest installation that offers coolness and relaxation during the day, then transforms into a venue for artistic and musical events in the evening. Yoga, family workshops, DJ sets, live concerts, and dance performances follow one another throughout the summer in this unique green setting.
Open-Air Cinema and Summer Docks
Every Friday evening, from early July to late August, open-air cinema screenings are organized in eight Strasbourg neighborhoods, with food trucks and a bar from 6 PM and projection at nightfall. The Summer Docks, located on the Malraux peninsula, offer an urban beach with a water sports base, sports activities, and family entertainment from July to late August.
Music, Folklore, and Street Arts
The bandstand in Parc des Contades hosts concerts and shows several times a week. The Alsatian Folklore Evenings perpetuate tradition with traditional dances and music every Sunday. The summer concludes in style with FARSe (Strasbourg Street Arts Festival), which takes over the city streets in late August with over 50 free performances.
Strasbourg, European Capital Celebrating
The summer program enriches Strasbourg's already exceptional cultural offerings. The July 14th fireworks display in Parc de l'Étoile, the Fête de la Musique on June 21st, and the Symphony of Arts in the Jardin des Deux Rives complete an unparalleled summer calendar in the Grand Est region.
