The cathedral transfigured by light

An iconic monument of Strasbourg and a jewel of European Gothic architecture, the Strasbourg Cathedral takes on a radically different appearance at nightfall each summer. The cathedral's grand show, a highlight of L'Été à Strasbourg, turns its majestic western façade into a living canvas blending architectural projection, light displays, and an original soundscape. Admission is free, and the show runs continuously every evening at the Place de la Cathédrale.

"OPUS 800": the 2026 production

For the summer of 2026, the lighting design has been entrusted to the collectives Passe Muraille and AV Extended, who have created "OPUS 800" to mark the 800th anniversary of the Fondation de l'Œuvre Notre-Dame. Through six scenes, the cathedral appears as a living work of art, shaped over the centuries by stone, time, and the craftsmanship of generations of artisans. More than just a historical narrative, the production offers an immersive experience into eight centuries of construction, restoration, and heritage. The show is renewed annually with a different theme, offering a unique experience each season.

Place de la Cathédrale: a stunning setting

The projections take place on the Place de la Cathédrale, at the foot of the western façade. This historic square, the beating heart of medieval Strasbourg, offers the perfect vantage point to take in the show. Visitors are advised to arrive early to find a comfortable spot and soak up the atmosphere as night falls over the 142-meter spire. Throughout the summer, the square also hosts a free exhibition featuring plaster casts from restoration works, which are usually kept out of public view.

A World Heritage cathedral

The Strasbourg Cathedral, built between the 12th and 15th centuries, is an absolute masterpiece of Gothic art. Its western façade, with its hundreds of sculptures and monumental rose window, is a "book of stone" of incredible richness. Its spire, reaching 142 meters, made it the tallest building in the world for over two centuries. The light and sound show offers a unique way to rediscover this monument, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988.

At the heart of Strasbourg's summer program

The grand show is part of the L'Été à Strasbourg program, which also includes the July 14th National Day celebrations (a public dance and a drone and fireworks display at the Parc de l'Étoile), the Docks Malraux and their pop-up beach on the Presqu'île André Malraux, traditional Alsatian music and dance in the city center squares, and the FARSe street arts festival, which closes the season at the end of August. The combination of these free events makes the historic center the liveliest place in Strasbourg during the summer.
