Free sound and light show on the facade of Strasbourg Cathedral
Every summer, the western facade of Strasbourg Cathedral metamorphoses into a striking tableau of light and sound. Created by lighting designer Daniel Knipper, these free illuminations reveal the details of this UNESCO World Heritage Gothic masterpiece, invisible in daylight, every evening from 10:30 PM to midnight. A 30-minute show blending nature, art, and light on Place du Château.
An emblematic monument of Strasbourg and a jewel of European Gothic architecture, Notre-Dame Cathedral offers a radically different face each summer at nightfall. The Cathedral Illuminations, a highlight of L'Été à Strasbourg (Summer in Strasbourg), transform its majestic western facade into a living canvas where nature, art, and light blend. This free show, lasting about 30 minutes, runs in a loop from 10:30 PM to midnight throughout the summer.
The lighting design is the work of lighting designer Daniel Knipper, who masterfully reveals the architectural details of the cathedral, usually invisible in daylight. Each sculpture, each rose window, each gargoyle comes to life under the colored beams, accompanied by an original sound creation that envelops Place du Château in an enchanting atmosphere. The show is renewed each year with a different theme, offering a unique experience with each edition.
The illuminations unfold on Place du Château, at the foot of the cathedral's western facade. This historic square, the beating heart of medieval Strasbourg, offers an ideal viewpoint to admire the spectacle. Visitors are invited to arrive before 9 PM to settle in comfortably and enjoy the atmosphere that gradually builds as night falls on the 142-meter spire.
Strasbourg Cathedral, whose construction spanned from the 12th to the 15th century, is one of the absolute masterpieces of Gothic art. Its western facade, with its hundreds of sculptures and monumental rose window, constitutes an incredibly rich "stone book." Its spire, culminating at 142 meters, made it the tallest building in the world for over two centuries. The sound and light show offers a unique way to rediscover this monument, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988.
The illuminations are part of the L'Été à Strasbourg program, which also includes the immersive installation Der Wald – La Forêt on Place du Château, the Summer Docks, open-air cinema, and the FARSe festival. The combination of the forest installation during the day and the illuminations in the evening makes Place du Château the most magical place in Strasbourg during the summer.
The 2026 Strasbourg Cathedral illuminations promise an unprecedented show in a new format, every evening of the summer on Place du Château.
