Strasbourg Art Photography: The City as an Open-Air Gallery

Since 2016, Strasbourg Art Photography has been reinventing the way contemporary photography is discovered by transforming the entire city into a vast exhibition trail. Founded by photographer and art critic Ryo Tomo, this atypical festival has made the bold choice of permanence: rather than a one-off event, it offers a continuous program of exhibitions, meetings, and artistic projects throughout the year.

A Unique Photographic Trail in Alsace

The concept is as simple as it is innovative: to invest about fifty locations scattered throughout Strasbourg and its surroundings — art galleries, cafes, restaurants, bookstores, hotels, cultural spaces — to host photographic exhibitions accessible to all. Visitors are invited to wander through the city, map in hand, discovering works that dialogue with their daily environment. This approach breaks down the barriers between art and urban life, making contemporary photography truly popular.

Flagship Events and Innovative Projects

Beyond the permanent trail, the festival organizes key events that punctuate Strasbourg's artistic season. The Young Photography Competition, open to emerging talents, offers valuable visibility to new generations of photographers. The European Art & Business Club creates bridges between the art world and the business world, promoting patronage and artistic commissions.

The festival has also developed an ambitious digital component with virtual exhibitions accessible online, extending the experience beyond the city limits. In 2026, for its tenth anniversary, the festival is launching anime&video, a new event dedicated to animation and art video, as well as an editorial project titled Le double imaginaire: la photographie et l'écrit.

An International and Engaged Program

Strasbourg Art Photography showcases artists of all nationalities and sensibilities. The exhibition German Female Artists (2025-2026) at Citadines Kléber illustrates this international openness and attention to diverse perspectives. The festival values documentary photography as much as plastic creation, portraiture as much as landscape, commissioned work as much as personal projects.
