The European meeting place for fantastic, horror, and science fiction cinema
Every autumn, FEFFS transforms Strasbourg into the European capital of genre cinema. For ten days, the city's dark rooms screen the best of fantastic, horror, and science fiction films from around the world. Official competitions, previews, fantasy night, masterclasses, and a festive village on Place Saint-Thomas: the festival, created in 2008 by the association Les Films du Spectre, has established itself as a must-see for cinephiles seeking thrills and discoveries.
The adventure began in 2006 when the association Les Films du Spectre launched the Hammer Film Festival, a tribute to the mythical productions of the British studios Hammer. The success encouraged the organizers to repeat the experience in 2007 with the Spectre Film Festival, dedicated to the golden age of science fiction. In 2008, the festival joined the European Federation of Fantastic Film Festivals (EFFFF) and took its current name: Strasbourg European Fantastic Film Festival. Since then, it has continued to grow.
Each year, FEFFS programs a demanding official selection mixing feature and short films, documentaries, and animated films, all united by their belonging to genre cinema. The competitive sections cover fantasy, horror, science fiction, thriller, and experimental cinema. European premieres, thematic retrospectives, and carte blanches to directors complete the program.
The Fantasy Nights are for the night owls: a marathon of films screened continuously throughout the night in an electric atmosphere. The festival also offers masterclasses with international directors and actors, professional meetings, and a festive village set up on Place Saint-Thomas, a meeting point for festival-goers between screenings.
FEFFS takes over the main cinemas in Strasbourg: Star, Star Saint-Exupéry, Vox, UGC Ciné Cité, and Le Cosmos. This presence in the existing cinema network allows it to reach a wide audience, from genre cinema enthusiasts to the curious coming to discover off-the-beaten-path films.
With its 18th edition in 2025, FEFFS has firmly established itself in the European fantastic film festival landscape, alongside Sitges, Brussels, or Trieste. The festival benefits from the support of the CNC, the City of Strasbourg, and the Grand Est Region. Its ambition: to continue defending bold, popular, and international genre cinema, rooted in Strasbourg's cultural life.
