The Garden of Peace: When Nature Replaces Weapons

The Garden of Peace occupies a historically significant location: the former military esplanade of the Citadel of Bitche, once a training ground and fortification. Today, this space has been transformed into a contemporary garden that cultivates peace where war once reigned, offering a living testament to nature's ability to heal the wounds of history.

A 500-Meter Landscape Route

The garden extends for nearly 500 meters and offers a succession of spaces with varied atmospheres:

• Open spaces: flower meadows, lawns, and panoramic views of the citadel and the Vosges du Nord
• Enclosed spaces: walled gardens, plant rooms, and green alcoves
• Panoramic route: a landscaped walk offering varied viewpoints and botanical discoveries

This alternation creates a rhythm of discovery that invites meditative strolling and contemplation.

Biodiversity and Landscape Art

The garden is designed as a space of biodiversity where perennials, grasses, trees, and shrubs form a rich and varied ecosystem. The plant compositions evolve with the seasons, offering a constantly renewed spectacle: spring blooms, summer exuberance, golden autumn hues. The garden is certified and recognized for the quality of its landscape design.

Guided Tours and Activities

The Garden of Peace offers a program of activities throughout the season:

• Guided tours: on the first Sunday of each month (May to September), a gardener from the City of Bitche leads a commented tour at no extra cost
• Rendez-vous aux Jardins: participation in the national garden days in June
• European Heritage Days: special opening in September
• Educational activities: botany and ecology discovery workshops for schools and families

L'Accueillett': Shop and Café

L'Accueillett', the garden's reception area, serves as a shop and café. Visitors can enjoy drinks, pastries, and light snacks while taking in the view of the garden and the citadel.

A Link with the Citadel

The Garden of Peace, together with the Citadel of Bitche, forms a coherent heritage and cultural ensemble. Entry to the garden is free for visitors to the Citadel, inviting a complete discovery of this exceptional site in the Pays de Bitche, in the heart of the Vosges du Nord Regional Natural Park.
