The biggest autumn jazz and contemporary music festival in France
Nancy Jazz Pulsations (NJP) is a jazz and contemporary music festival held annually in Nancy in October since 1973. For two weeks, around a hundred concerts take place in the city's iconic venues: the Chapiteau de la Pépinière, L'Autre Canal, Salle Poirel, Théâtre de la Manufacture, and Opéra national de Lorraine. The programming mixes jazz, blues, soul, funk, world music, and electronic music, attracting nearly 100,000 spectators each year.
Created in 1973 by a handful of Nancy enthusiasts, Nancy Jazz Pulsations was born from the drive of Xavier Brocker, who was already organizing jazz concerts in the attic of a house in Xirocourt between 1969 and 1973, hosting renowned musicians like Dany Doriz, Harold "Hal" Singer, Mickey Baker, and T-Bone Walker. The festival was initially held every two years before becoming annual from 1982, gradually establishing itself as one of the largest jazz festivals in France and Europe.
While jazz is the festival's DNA, NJP has evolved over the decades to embrace all contemporary music. The programming boldly mixes jazz in all its forms (gypsy, fusion, contemporary), blues, soul, funk, world music, rap, French chanson, and electronic music. This stylistic openness allows the festival to reach a broad, intergenerational audience, from jazz purists to lovers of sonic discoveries.
Throughout its editions, Nancy Jazz Pulsations has hosted legends of jazz and world music: Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Nina Simone, Ray Charles, Herbie Hancock, Marcus Miller, as well as contemporary artists like Ibrahim Maalouf, Avishai Cohen, Salif Keïta, and Groundation. The 2025 edition notably featured Chilly Gonzales, Deluxe, The Limiñanas, Mathieu Boogaerts, and a special film concert of the movie Whiplash under the Chapiteau de la Pépinière.
One of the festival's strengths lies in the diversity of its programming venues, which bring the entire city to life for two weeks:
Nancy Jazz Pulsations also offers numerous free events open to all:
The festival is committed to sustainable development and accessibility. Specific measures are in place for people with disabilities, and prevention campaigns accompany each edition. The Nancy Jazz Pulsations association works year-round to keep music alive in Nancy and the Grand Nancy metropolitan area, with events like Nancy Jazz Poursuite, which extends the festival's spirit beyond October.
