The graphic design festival in Strasbourg
Initiated by the association Central Vapeur, Format(s) is the festival dedicated to graphic design in Strasbourg. Since its first edition in 2022, it explores typography, graphic design, digital design, and publishing through exhibitions, a graphic art fair, conferences, round tables, and workshops. Rooted in the Strasbourg creative ecosystem with the support of HEAR, it brings together professionals, students, and the curious around the richness of contemporary graphic forms.
Created by the association Central Vapeur, a key player in illustration and comics in Strasbourg since 2010, the Format(s) festival has opened a new chapter by dedicating an event to graphic design. Launched in 2022, the festival has quickly established itself as a major event for creatives in the Grand Est region and beyond.
Each edition of Format(s) unfolds an ambitious program structured around several axes: exhibitions showcasing posters, artist books, typographies, and digital creations; a graphic art fair bringing together independent publishers, design studios, and creators; conferences led by renowned graphic designers, typographers, and art directors; round tables questioning the challenges of contemporary design; and workshops open to the public to introduce graphic techniques.
The festival benefits from its proximity to HEAR (Haute école des arts du Rhin), whose students and graduates from the Graphic Communication workshop actively participate in the programming. This connection between training, creation, and dissemination makes Format(s) a place for transmission and emulation for new generations of graphic designers.
Format(s) takes over Strasbourg's cultural and heritage sites for its exhibitions and events. L'Aubette, a masterpiece of modern art decorated by Theo van Doesburg, Hans Arp, and Sophie Taeuber-Arp, has notably hosted festival exhibitions, creating a fascinating dialogue between historical graphic heritage and contemporary creation. The festival also takes place at Le 5e lieu, a cultural space of the City of Strasbourg.
Format(s) is part of the three-year contract Strasbourg European Capital 2024-2026, with the support of the DRAC Grand Est, the Région Grand Est, the Collectivité européenne d'Alsace, and the Ville et Eurométropole de Strasbourg.
The 5th edition of the Format(s) festival will be held in Strasbourg with a main weekend on October 10 and 11, 2026. The program includes: 4 exhibitions, an independent publishing fair, a poster trail, 5 conferences, 2 round tables, 3 flash talks, 2 public workshops, and a festive evening.
