Every June 21, Sainte-Suzanne, on the east coast of La Réunion, celebrates the Fête de la Musique: amateur musicians, choirs, and local artists animate the city center for free. Organized by the City of Sainte-Suzanne, the day is entirely free and open to all, in the Creole and festive spirit of the island.
The Fête de la Musique in Sainte-Suzanne
As everywhere in France since 1982, the Fête de la Musique transforms the commune of Sainte-Suzanne into an open-air stage every June 21. In La Réunion, the event follows the national date set by the Ministère de la Culture: music freely takes over public spaces, from afternoon workshops to evening concerts.
A celebration in the heart of the city
Usually, the festivities are concentrated in the center of Sainte-Suzanne, around the fairground market and the town hall square: workshops, stalls, food and drink, and open stages welcome choirs, amateur groups, and local artists until the evening, in a mix of styles unique to the island (maloya, séga, variety, contemporary music).
