Pontoise, Prefecture and City of Art and History
Pontoise (95300) is the prefecture of Val-d'Oise, the capital of this department created in 1968. Perched on a rocky spur overlooking the Oise and the Cergy plain, Pontoise is a City of Art and History whose origins date back to the Gallo-Roman period. The city reached its medieval peak as the seat of the Vexin county before gradually declining in favor of the new towns surrounding it.
Pontoise boasts exceptional architectural heritage: the Saint-Maclou Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece begun in the 12th century, the Pontoise Museum (Musée Tavet-Delacour) dedicated to medieval and contemporary art, and numerous medieval and Renaissance houses in the narrow streets of the historic center. The city was also a major center for Impressionism, where Camille Pissarro lived and worked from 1866 to 1883.
A July 14th in the Prefectural City
The National Day of July 14th in Pontoise takes on a special dimension as the official ceremony of the Val-d'Oise prefecture. The day begins with an official ceremony of a republican nature, with the participation of the prefect of Val-d'Oise, departmental elected officials, and representatives of state services. This institutional dimension highlights Pontoise's role as the administrative capital of the department.
Popular festivities follow the official ceremony, transforming the medieval streets and historic squares of Pontoise into festive spaces. The contrast between the solemnity of the war memorial and the exuberance of the fireworks perfectly illustrates the dual nature of July 14th: remembrance and celebration.
Fireworks over the Oise
The July 14th fireworks in Pontoise benefit from an exceptional setting. Launched from the heights of the old town or from the banks of the Oise, the pyrotechnic show illuminates both the medieval city and the river that borders it. The reflection of the fireworks in the waters of the Oise creates spectacular visual effects, reminiscent of the landscapes that Pissarro immortalized in his many paintings of the river.
Spectators gather on the developed riverbanks, on the terraces, and on the heights of the old town, enjoying the many viewpoints offered by Pontoise's topography. The hill on which the cathedral stands offers incomparable panoramas of the Cergy plain and the Oise loop.
Heritage Activities and Popular Festivities
Pontoise's quality as a City of Art and History is reflected in the July 14th program: guided tours of the heritage sites are often offered during the day, allowing residents and visitors to discover or rediscover the Saint-Maclou Cathedral, the museums, and the Impressionist sites related to Pissarro.
Popular balls, open-air concerts, and activities for children complete the program, making July 14th in Pontoise a day that combines culture, remembrance, and festivities. The medieval squares and gardens of the old town serve as natural settings for these celebrations.
Pontoise and Impressionism
Pontoise's Impressionist dimension is a major cultural asset for the city. Camille Pissarro, who lived in Pontoise from 1866 to 1883, made it one of the key centers of French Impressionism, hosting Paul Cézanne and other artists who came to work there. The Pissarro Museum, housed in a former bourgeois house in the old town, holds many of the master's works and organizes regular exhibitions.
This artistic dimension enriches the July 14th festivities: Pontoise is not just an administrative prefecture, it is a city of culture and history, proud of its past and resolutely focused on the future within the Cergy-Pontoise urban community.
