A night to rediscover the museums of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin
The European Museum Night of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin is a major cultural event that opens the doors of the city's museums for free in the evening, every third Saturday of May. The Thomas Henry Museum and the Liberation Museum offer night visits, creative workshops, musical performances, and unique animations. It's a unique opportunity to rediscover the collections in a different light, in a festive and friendly atmosphere.
Every year in May, the European Museum Night transforms the museums of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin into places of celebration and nocturnal discovery. Launched by the Ministry of Culture in 2005, this national and European event invites the public to (re)discover museum collections for free in a unique atmosphere, between shadows and lights.
The Thomas Henry Museum, one of the most important fine arts museums in Normandy, is the main player in this cultural night in Cherbourg. Housing a remarkable collection of paintings from the 15th to the 20th century, including works by Jean-François Millet, a native of the region, the museum offers a special program from 6:30 PM to midnight. Free and guided tours, participatory workshops, artistic performances, and musical interludes punctuate the evening.
The program for the Museum Night in Cherbourg is designed to appeal to all audiences. Families can participate in creative workshops such as making pajama party masks, fluorescent makeup with a photo booth, or composing herbal teas. Music lovers will enjoy the musical interludes, such as harp recitals that resonate in the museum halls late in the evening, creating an enchanting atmosphere.
The Liberation Museum, located in the old Fort du Roule overlooking Cherbourg harbor, also participates in this exceptional night. This museum retraces the history of World War II in the Cotentin region and the liberation of Cherbourg in June 1944. Thematic tours and specific activities are offered for the Museum Night.
The complete freeness of the event allows everyone to enjoy this unique cultural evening. The Museum Night is also an opportunity to create social connections and make culture accessible to all, in a festive and relaxed spirit that contrasts with the sometimes austere image of museums.
