Toul Plunges Back into the Middle Ages
Every year in June, the city of Toul, a fortified town in Meurthe-et-Moselle with twenty centuries of history, opens its doors to the Middle Ages for an exceptional weekend. Toul Flamboyante transforms the area around Saint-Étienne Cathedral, a masterpiece of flamboyant Gothic architecture, into a true medieval city brought to life by hundreds of costumed reenactors.
A Life-Sized Medieval Village
At the foot of the cathedral, a medieval village comes alive with its artisan workshops, taverns, and parade grounds. Visitors are transported to an authentic atmosphere where they can experience:
- Artisans: blacksmiths, tanners, potters, illuminators, calligraphers, and spinners revive ancient crafts before the public's eyes.
- Knights and Warriors: jousting, medieval combat demonstrations, and armored fights.
- Musicians and Troubadours: medieval music, jesters, and jugglers.
- Fire Shows: fire-breathers and flaming jugglers light up the night.
- Dragon: an impressive creature roams the city streets.
Merchants and Medieval Flavors
Merchants from all over France offer handcrafted jewelry, leather goods, carved wood, wrought iron accessories, ancient games, period costumes, and medieval decorations. The taverns serve medieval treats: mead, ale, old-fashioned cooked dishes, and traditional pastries.
Activities for the Whole Family
Toul Flamboyante is a resolutely family-friendly festival. Children can try archery, calligraphy, medieval games, and watch puppet shows. Adults can enjoy craft demonstrations, tastings, and evening shows.
The Exceptional Setting of Toul
The Saint-Étienne Cathedral, with its 15th-century flamboyant Gothic facade, provides a magnificent and authentic backdrop for this festival. The adjacent cloister, medieval streets, and city ramparts contribute to creating a unique immersive atmosphere in the Grand Est region.
An Unmissable Summer Event
Having become an unmissable summer event in Lorraine over the years, Toul Flamboyante attracts thousands of visitors each year to rediscover the medieval heritage of this former episcopal city.
