Medieval celebration of the Lorraine New Year in Void-Vacon
The Nouvel An Lorrain de Void-Vacon is a major medieval festival organized every two years since 2002 in this village in the Meuse region, located between Nancy and Bar-le-Duc. This event commemorates the old Lorraine calendar, according to which the year began on March 25th, the Annunciation Day, until 1582. For two days, over 3,000 visitors discover an ambitious medieval reenactment: a torchlight procession with over 300 costumes, a grand medieval banquet, an artisan market, equestrian shows, combat demonstrations, and street performers take over the village.
Until 1582, the year in Lorraine began on March 25th, the feast of the Annunciation, marking the end of winter and the beginning of spring renewal. The Nouvel An Lorrain de Void-Vacon commemorates this forgotten tradition by organizing a grand medieval festival around this symbolic date, bringing a little-known part of Lorraine's history back to life.
Every two years since 2002, the village of Void-Vacon transforms into a medieval town for a weekend. The event mobilizes hundreds of volunteers and attracts over 3,000 visitors for each edition.
On Saturday evening, a spectacular torchlight procession crosses the village. Over 300 medieval costumes, specially made for the event, parade by torchlight in a mystical and grand atmosphere. This nocturnal procession is one of the most memorable moments of the festival.
On Saturday evening, a grand medieval banquet brings together guests in costume for a ten-course meal inspired by medieval cuisine. Knights, nobles, peasants, troubadours, and jugglers share the table in a festive and theatrical atmosphere.
On Sunday, a free medieval market opens its stalls in the village streets. Artisans, blacksmiths, potters, basket weavers, and herbalists offer their creations and products in a period atmosphere.
Equestrian shows on the main square covered with sand, sword and axe combat demonstrations, presentations of medieval weapons, and street performance troupes (eight troupes on average) entertain the village throughout the weekend.
Void-Vacon is a commune in the Meuse valley located between Nancy and Bar-le-Duc, on the ancient Roman road connecting Reims to Metz. This village with its rich historical heritage offers an ideal setting for this medieval reenactment, with its old streets and traditional stone buildings.
