The largest Saint Nicholas parade in France, in the heart of Lorraine
The Fêtes de la Saint-Nicolas de Nancy are the biggest festive event in Lorraine, listed as Intangible Cultural Heritage of France since 2018. Every year, from late November to early January, Nancy celebrates its patron saint during forty days of festivities. The Grand Parade on the first Saturday of December, with its allegorical floats and hundreds of costumed participants, culminates in Place Stanislas with video mapping and fireworks. Christmas villages, a Ferris wheel, and street performances complete this free popular festival.
Each year, the Fêtes de la Saint-Nicolas transform Nancy into the European capital of the Lorraine patronal festival. For over forty days, from late November to early January, the city lights up and vibrates to the rhythm of a rich program of shows, entertainment, and festive markets.
The highlight of the festivities is the Grand Parade, held on the first Saturday of December. This monumental procession brings together over 600 participants: performing arts companies, musicians, dancers, stilt walkers, fire-eaters, and costumed performers. About fifteen allegorical floats, designed and built by the municipalities, MJCs, and associations of the Grand Nancy Metropolis with the help of hundreds of volunteers, parade from Place Carnot through the streets of the historic center.
The parade culminates with a triumphant arrival at Place Stanislas, an 18th-century architectural gem listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Saint Nicholas appears at the top of the Hôtel de Ville, where the mayor symbolically hands him the keys to the city. This is followed by a video mapping show projected onto the monumental facades and a spectacular fireworks display that lights up the Nancy sky.
Several themed villages are set up in the city center for the duration of the festivities:
Beyond the Grand Parade and markets, the Fêtes de Saint-Nicolas offer a varied program:
The link between Saint Nicholas and Lorraine dates back to the 11th century, when the knight Aubert de Varangéville brought a relic of the saint from Bari in 1098. Saint Nicholas became the patron saint of Lorraine after Duke René II's victory at the Battle of Nancy in 1477, which was placed under his protection. Nancy perpetuates this age-old tradition with festivities that have continuously grown, becoming the largest Saint Nicholas parade in France, recognized as Intangible Cultural Heritage of France since 2018.
The Fêtes de Saint-Nicolas mobilize the entire Grand Nancy Metropolis. Many municipalities organize their own parades and festivities, making this event a popular gathering that brings together several hundreds of thousands of visitors and contributes to the tourist appeal of Nancy and the entire Grand Est region.
