Traditional festival around the communal oven in Dieue-sur-Meuse
The Fête du Four de Dieue-sur-Meuse is a traditional festival held every year on the third Sunday of September since 1985. Organized by the association Traditions Meusiennes, this event celebrates the heritage and ancestral know-how of the Meuse region around the communal oven lit for the occasion. Baking bread and lorraine pâtés, artisanal market, exhibition of old vehicles, old-fashioned games, guinguette dance and lorraine potée make up the program of this festive and gourmet day on the square of the fortified church of Dieue-sur-Meuse.
The Fête du Four de Dieue-sur-Meuse is one of the most emblematic living heritage events in the Meuse region. Since 1985, every third Sunday of September, the association Traditions Meusiennes relights the village's communal oven to bake bread, lorraine pâtés, and other specialties, perpetuating an ancestral practice that was at the heart of village life in the past.
The highlight of the day is the lighting of the communal oven and the public baking of traditional breads and lorraine pâtés. Visitors can witness all stages of production, from dough preparation to removal from the oven, and taste these old-fashioned baked goods.
The famous lorraine potée, a traditional dish based on cabbage, bacon, and sausages, is served at noon in a friendly, rustic meal atmosphere. This communal meal is one of the day's highlights.
An artisanal and local producer market allows visitors to discover the region's know-how: cheeses, jams, honey, charcuterie, basketry, pottery, and other artisanal creations from the Meuse region.
An exhibition of old vehicles (cars, tractors, motorcycles) attracts mechanics and automotive history enthusiasts, adding an extra heritage touch to the event.
Traditional old-fashioned games are offered to children and families: wooden games, sack races, tug-of-war, and other fun activities that brought joy to village festivals of yesteryear.
A guinguette dance livens up the afternoon with music and dancing, in the tradition of rural popular dances.
The association Traditions Meusiennes, based at the Maison de la Musique et des Traditions in Dieue-sur-Meuse, aims to transmit the culture, popular arts, traditional know-how, and customs of the Meuse region. It works to preserve the memorial, cultural, and material heritage of the department.
