Open-air contemporary art center in the Meuse forest
Vent des Forêts is a contemporary art center of national importance nestled in the heart of 5,000 hectares of forest in the Meuse region. Founded in 1997 in Lahaymeix, it brings together six villages around a unique project combining contemporary creation and rural life. Each summer, international artists create site-specific works during residencies. Over 150 permanent works line 45 km of marked trails, freely accessible on foot, by bike, or on horseback, along seven hiking routes lasting one to four and a half hours.
Since 1997, Vent des Forêts has championed the fruitful encounter between rural life and contemporary art. Labeled a "National Contemporary Art Center" by the Ministry of Culture, this unique European site unites six Meuse communes — Fresnes-au-Mont, Lahaymeix, Nicey-sur-Aire, Pierrefitte-sur-Aire, Dompcevrin, and Ville-devant-Belrain — around a collective artistic adventure supported by over 120 volunteers.
Each year, national and international artists are invited to stay for several weeks, or even months, in partner villages to conceive and create works specifically designed for the territory. They benefit from the support of a network of over 80 specialized artisans and professionals: blacksmiths, stonecutters, wood sculptors, glassblowers, and local vocational high schools. Since its creation, over 250 works have been produced, with approximately 150 permanently visible along the forest trails.
The artworks are spread across 45 kilometers of marked trails through 5,000 hectares of forest among four communes: Lahaymeix, Dompcevrin, Fresnes-au-Mont, and Pierrefitte-sur-Aire. Seven hiking routes, ranging from one to four and a half hours, offer total immersion in a landscape where art and nature dialogue freely. Monumental sculptures, ephemeral installations, land art works: each trail holds its share of surprises and wonder around the bends.
Beyond the trails, Vent des Forêts has developed structuring facilities for the area: the Café Vent des Forêts in Lahaymeix, a place for conviviality and visitor reception; two "Maisons Sylvestres" — Le Nichoir and La Noisette — designed by designer Matali Crasset, offering unusual accommodation in the heart of the forest; and the Maison Vent des Forêts, a community space and creation workshop inaugurated in 2020. Each summer, the inauguration of new works brings together artists, residents, and visitors for a festive day of art, encounters, and conviviality.
With nearly 25,000 visitors per year, Vent des Forêts has established itself as a benchmark for contemporary art in rural areas. The project demonstrates that it is possible to combine artistic excellence and territorial dynamism, transforming a forest area into a true open-air museum accessible to all. The association continues its development with a rehabilitation project including an educational space, reflecting its commitment to transmitting and sharing contemporary art with the widest possible audience.
The 2026 season of Vent des Forêts opens its trails from March 1st to September 30th. New artists in residence will create new works inaugurated in July, further enriching the 45 km route through the Meuse forests.
