The Christmas market at the foot of the Avioth basilica in Meuse
The Avioth Christmas Village is a Christmas market held every December at the foot of the majestic Avioth basilica, in the north of the Meuse department. Organized for over twenty years by the association AnimAvioth, this event hosts around 70 exhibitors, six concerts, a grand parade, Santa Claus, and a nocturnal pyrotechnic show. With its themed decorations and street entertainment, the Avioth Christmas Village is one of the most renowned Christmas markets in the department.
The Avioth basilica, a Gothic gem nicknamed the "basilica of the fields" due to its location in a small village of 80 inhabitants, offers an exceptional setting for the Avioth Christmas Village. For over twenty years, the AnimAvioth association has been organizing this event, which has become a must-see in the northern Meuse region and beyond.
The market brings together around 70 exhibitors offering local and artisanal products: Christmas decorations, jewelry, wooden objects, candles, chocolates, jams, honey, foie gras, wines, and spirits. Each stand is carefully selected to guarantee the quality and authenticity of the products.
Six concerts punctuate the weekend, offering a varied musical program in line with the Christmas spirit: choirs, instrumental ensembles, and local artists perform in and around the basilica.
On Saturday afternoon, a grand opening parade marks the official launch of the Christmas Village. This festive and colorful procession travels through the village and delights young and old alike.
Santa Claus is present all weekend to welcome children, listen to their wishes, and distribute treats. A magical moment for the little ones.
On Saturday evening, a night show combining light and pyrotechnic effects creates a magical atmosphere around the illuminated basilica. This moment of grace is one of the highlights of the event.
Themed street entertainment completes the program: costumed characters, magical decorations, and sketches create an enchanted universe throughout the village. The 2025 edition's theme was elves, who spread their magic in every corner of the village.
The Notre-Dame d'Avioth Basilica, built between the 13th and 14th centuries, is one of the most remarkable Gothic monuments in Lorraine. Classified as a historic monument, it impresses with its size and the fineness of its sculpture in a tiny village in northern Meuse, a few kilometers from the Belgian border.
