The big Christmas festival that lights up the historic heart of Limoges every winter
Every year for nearly three decades, Noël à Limoges has transformed the city center into a magical village. Around sixty traditional wooden chalets fill Place de la République and Place de la Motte, hosting local artisans, creators, and producers. A sledding slope, a roller rink, a sound and light show with video mapping on the Saint-Michel-des-Lions basilica, monumental illuminations, enchanting parades, and concerts punctuate a full month of free festivities for the whole family. With over 600,000 visitors per edition, it's the unmissable winter event in Haute-Vienne.
Since the late 1990s, the City of Limoges has organized one of the largest Christmas markets in west-central France every winter. What began as a modest craft market has evolved into a true Christmas festival that shines far beyond Haute-Vienne. For a month, from the last Friday in November until the year-end holidays, the historic center of Limoges dons its festive lights to welcome families, curious visitors, and food lovers in a warm and magical atmosphere.
The beating heart of Noël à Limoges is its traditional markets. About sixty wooden chalets are set up on Place de la République and Place de la Motte, offering arts and crafts, original creations, Christmas decorations, wooden toys, jewelry, and gourmet specialties from the Limousin region. Every year, a 100% local artisans and producers market takes place on the parvis of the Cathédrale Saint-Étienne, bringing together around a hundred exhibitors selected by the Chamber of Trades and the Chamber of Agriculture: crafts, food products, and local farmers for unique gifts and exceptional gourmet baskets.
For several editions, the Basilique Saint-Michel-des-Lions has become the nightly canvas for a free video mapping show projected every ten minutes from 6 PM to 9:30 PM. The 2025 edition, titled « Murmures d'étoiles » (Whispers of Stars), presented a luminous fresco in eight scenes, blending molten enamels, phosphorescent stained glass, sparkling ceramics, and whispering porcelains, paying homage to the identity of Limoges, the capital of fire arts. This magical show, visible from Place de la Motte, has become one of the most photographed highlights of the event.
Noël à Limoges would not be complete without its free attractions. The three-lane sledding slope delights young and old on Place de la République, while the 350 m² roller rink (with 45 m² reserved for children), offering 150 pairs of skates, replaced the traditional ice rink in 2023. The Santa Claus's chalet, the fir tree carousel, the enchanting parades in the pedestrian streets, and the concerts of gospel, choir, and Christmas music complete a rich and entirely free program.
The Christmas illuminations transform the face of Limoges as night falls. The Évêché, Place Carnot, Place Denis-Dussoubs, Boulevard Louis-Blanc, Porte Tourny, Place des Carmes, Square Jacques-Chirac with its illuminated sequoia, and the Hôtel de Ville sparkle with a thousand lights. These light decorations, renewed each year, contribute to the unique atmosphere of Noël à Limoges and attract over 600,000 visitors each edition, making this event the major winter gathering in all of Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
The 29th edition of Noël à Limoges is expected from late November to late December 2026, featuring its artisan markets, a new sound and light show, sledding and roller rinks, and a month of illuminations throughout the historic center.
The 29th edition of Noël à Limoges will once again take over the squares of the city center from late November to late December 2026. The artisan Christmas markets, the video mapping sound and light show, the sledding and roller rinks, the monumental illuminations, and the enchanting parades will be back for a full month of free festivities.
