The Limousin Ostensions: a thousand years of fervor and tradition

The Ostensions Septennales Limousines are among the most remarkable heritage events in France. Every seven years, more than twenty communes in Limousin organize sumptuous processions during which the relics of the founding saints of the region are taken out of their churches and carried in procession through the streets, accompanied by banners, flags, historical costumes, and figures in period dress. This unique tradition, deeply rooted in the identity of Limousin, was inscribed in 2013 on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list.

Legendary origins: the 994 epidemic

The history of the Ostensions dates back to November 11, 994, when Limousin was struck by a terrible epidemic of ergotism, an intoxication caused by the consumption of rye contaminated with ergot. Faced with the distress of the population, Bishop Hilduin and Duke William the Great of Aquitaine decided to gather the relics of Saint Martial, the first bishop and evangelizer of Limousin, to expose them to the veneration of the faithful. Chronicles of the time report more than seven thousand healings and the cessation of the epidemic on December 4, when Saint Martial's body was returned to his tomb.

The seven-year cycle and the ostensory communes

It was from 1512 that the Ostensions adopted their characteristic seven-year cycle, the number seven being considered sacred. The processions take place from April to November in the main communes of Haute-Vienne: Limoges, Saint-Junien, Le Dorat, Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat, Rochechouart, Eymoutiers, Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche, Aixe-sur-Vienne, Nexon, Aureil, Chaptelat, Saint-Victurnien, Javerdat, and Saint-Just-le-Martel, as well as in some communes in Creuse, Charente, and Vienne.

Relics and brotherhoods

The Ostensions honor the relics of many Limousin saints: Saint Martial, Saint Valerie, Saint Aurélien, Saint Léonard, Saint Loup, Saints Israël and Théobald in Le Dorat, Saints Cosmas and Damian, Saint Lucina, and many others. Twelve historical brotherhoods, founded between 1153 and 1659, organize and perpetuate the ceremonies in each commune. These brotherhoods transmit orally and in writing the artisanal, musical, and liturgical know-how necessary for the preparation of the processions, which begins a year in advance.

The 73rd Ostensions of 2023 and the future

The 73rd Ostensions took place from April to November 2023, attracting tens of thousands of participants and visitors. In Limoges, the great procession on April 15 and 16 brought together a considerable crowd around the reliquaries of Saint Martial and Saint Valerie. Le Dorat celebrated on June 4, and Saint-Junien concluded the major processions on June 25. The official closing of the 2023 Ostensions took place on November 12. Between the seven-year periods, commemorations, exhibitions, and cultural events keep the living memory of this tradition alive. The next Septennial Ostensions will take place in 2030.
