Festival of artistic encounters in Hélette — discontinued since the mid-2010s
There is no edition scheduled in 2026 for this event. This page remains accessible to archive the history of the manifestation and will be updated if a new edition is announced.
ℹ️ Festival discontinued. The Potéo Atypique was a festival of artistic encounters organized every two years in Hélette (inland Basque Country) by Compagnie Traboules. No edition has been publicly documented after the mid-2010s, and the organizer's website is no longer active: the festival no longer seems to be held today.
In the spirit of the Basque potéo — this tradition of going out in a group to celebrate meeting others — the festival took over the village square and the cultural café La Mer (Itsasoa) to offer street theater, circus, music, and dance performances, in connection with the inhabitants and artists of the region.
ℹ️ Festival discontinued. The Potéo Atypique no longer seems to be held today. No edition has been publicly documented after the mid-2010s (last editions noted in 2015-2016) and the Compagnie Traboules website (traboules.com) is no longer online. This page is kept for archival purposes. If a new edition were to be organized, the information would be updated.
Created by Compagnie Traboules, based in Hélette in the heart of the inland Basque Country, the Potéo Atypique drew its inspiration from the Basque tradition of potéo: going out in a group, going from bar to bar, celebrating encounters, and letting oneself be carried away by a warm atmosphere. Transposed into the artistic field, this concept became a festival where one wandered from show to show, where one mingled with artists and inhabitants in a friendly and quirky atmosphere.
The Potéo Atypique took place every two years in the village square of Hélette and at the cultural café La Mer (Itsasoa), a place of life and creation supported by Compagnie Traboules. For several days, these spaces transformed into open stages hosting varied artistic proposals: street theater, circus, music, dance, storytelling, and performances. The week gave a special place to shared creation times, notably with the Turbulences company, composed of artists working with autistic children, in residence with local artists and musicians.
Past editions had welcomed artists such as Anari, Makja, and Wally, reflecting an eclectic program that highlighted contemporary creation and unclassifiable artistic forms.
The ambition of the Potéo Atypique went beyond the scope of a simple festival. Compagnie Traboules sought to strengthen the ties between the local population, audiences, and artists during these weeks of artistic encounters. Shows were accompanied by participatory workshops, moments of sharing, and open creation times, in a spirit of exchange and proximity characteristic of the cultural life of the inland Basque Country.
Hélette, a small village in the inland Basque Country nestled in the hills of Lower Navarre, offered a unique setting for this atypical festival. Far from large urban centers, the Potéo Atypique affirmed that culture can flourish everywhere, including in rural areas, and that the encounter between artists and audiences does not need large infrastructures to be authentic and intense.
ℹ️ No 2026 edition. The Potéo Atypique, a biennial festival organised by Compagnie Traboules in Hélette, no longer seems to be held: no edition is documented after the mid-2010s and the organiser's website is no longer online. No 2026 edition was confirmed during our editorial check.
ℹ️ 2026 edition not scheduled — festival on hold. During our editorial check (June 2026), we found no public source announcing a 2026 edition of the Potéo Atypique in Hélette. The last documented editions date back to the mid-2010s (2015-2016) and the Compagnie Traboules website is no longer accessible. The festival's archive page remains available for its history.
