An iconic dessert celebrated for over 20 years
The Basque cake is one of the most delicious symbols of the Basque Country. With its two traditional varieties, filled with pastry cream or black cherry jam from Itxassou, it embodies over 200 years of artisanal know-how and Basque conviviality. Since 2004, the Fête du Gâteau Basque in Cambo-les-Bains has paid tribute to this specialty by bringing together the best artisanal bakers in the region.
A gourmet market in the heart of Cambo
The town center of Cambo-les-Bains transforms into a vast gourmet market for the occasion. Artisanal bakers present their creations: traditional Basque cakes with cream or cherry, but also original and creative versions. Local producers complement the offering with sheep's cheese, Bayonne ham, chocolate, Irouléguy wine, and other Basque regional specialties.
Competitions, workshops, and entertainment
The competition for the best Basque cake is the highlight of the festival, pitting the region's artisanal bakers against each other. Baking workshops allow visitors to discover the secrets of making Basque cake under the guidance of professionals. Children are also catered for with fun workshops and dedicated activities.
Basque culture and festive atmosphere
The Fête du Gâteau Basque is not just about gastronomy. Basque dances, traditional songs, Basque strength demonstrations, and concerts liven up the village throughout the weekend. The exceptional setting of Cambo-les-Bains, between the Arnaga gardens and the green hills of the Basque Country, adds to the charm of this autumn event which attracts thousands of visitors each year.
The Eguzkia association, guardian of tradition
The Eguzkia association, in partnership with the Chamber of Trades and Crafts of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques and the municipality of Cambo-les-Bains, organizes this event which has become a must-attend in the Basque festive calendar. It works to promote artisanal Basque cake and enhance the know-how of the region's bakers.
