Historical reenactment and civil and military life under the First Empire in Brienne-le-Château
The Rencontres Napoléoniennes of Brienne-le-Château are a historical reenactment festival dedicated to the Napoleonic era, organized by the Association des Amis du Musée Napoléon. The event features bivouacs, demonstrations of military and civilian life, period merchants, and commemorative ceremonies in the town where Napoleon Bonaparte studied at the Royal Military School from 1779 to 1784. A heritage and popular event in the heart of Champagne.
Brienne-le-Château holds a unique place in Napoleonic history. Three visits by the Emperor marked the destiny of this small town in the Aube department: his studious childhood at the Royal Military School from 1779 to 1784, a nostalgic return in 1805 when he was at the height of his power, and the Battle of Brienne in January 1814 against the Prussian troops of Marshal Blücher, during the Campaign of France. The Musée Napoléon, labeled a Musée de France, has preserved and transmitted this memory since 1970.
The Rencontres Napoléoniennes transport visitors into the atmosphere of the First Empire. Reenactment groups from all over France and Europe set up their bivouacs behind the Musée Napoléon and in the town's green spaces. Visitors can witness demonstrations of military maneuvers, discover the artillery and weapons of the era, observe the daily life of soldiers, and immerse themselves in the ambiance of a Napoleonic encampment.
Beyond the military aspect, the Rencontres Napoléoniennes highlight civilian life under the First Empire. Costumed artisans—basket makers, embroiderers, seamstresses, public scribes—practice their trades as they did in the early 19th century. Period merchants offer collector's items, books, uniforms, and Napoleonic souvenirs. Commemorative ceremonies and historical conferences complete the program.
The Rencontres Napoléoniennes are a free event open to all, attracting history enthusiasts, families, and the curious. The festive and educational atmosphere makes it a special occasion to discover or rediscover the Napoleonic epic in an authentic setting, just steps away from the very places where the young Bonaparte forged his destiny.
The 2026 Rencontres Napoléoniennes are expected in September in Brienne-le-Château. The historical reenactment program will be announced later by the Musée Napoléon.
