Sauerkraut, the soul of Alsatian gastronomy

The Sauerkraut Festival of Ribeauvillé perpetuates one of the culinary traditions dearest to the hearts of Alsatians. Sauerkraut, this long-simmered fermented cabbage with charcuterie and potatoes, is more than just a dish: it is a symbol of identity for an entire region. Organized annually in the autumn by the management association of the Foyer Saint-Grégoire, this festival invites you to rediscover this ancestral dish in its most authentic version, prepared according to the traditional recipes of the Alsatian vineyards.

A convivial meal at the Foyer Saint-Grégoire

The Foyer Saint-Grégoire, located at 10 Grand Rue de l'Église in Ribeauvillé, has been a beloved community gathering place for decades. Deeply rooted in the social and parish life of the town, this hall hosts festive events, shows, and shared meals throughout the year. For the Sauerkraut Festival, the association's volunteers prepare a complete meal including generous sauerkraut with toppings as the main course, followed by cheese, dessert, and coffee. Guests gather in the large hall of the foyer to share this moment of Alsatian conviviality.

Ribeauvillé, a medieval jewel on the Wine Route

Ribeauvillé, nestled at the foot of the Three Castles and in the heart of the Alsace Wine Route, offers an exceptional setting for this autumn festival. The 'Cité des Ménétriers' (Town of the Trumpeters), renowned for its half-timbered houses, picturesque alleys, and remarkable medieval heritage, is also a land of gastronomy and vineyards. The Grands Crus Geisberg, Kirchberg, and Osterberg are among the most prestigious in Alsace. The Sauerkraut Festival is thus part of an exceptional terroir, between wine tradition and the Rhenish art of living.

A tradition that spans generations

Since its creation, the Sauerkraut Festival of the Foyer Saint-Grégoire has brought together all generations from Ribeauvillé and the surrounding villages. It is an anticipated event that marks the arrival of the cold season, when the first mists dress the vineyard slopes and people gather around comforting dishes. The event testifies to the vitality of the Alsatian associative fabric and the attachment of the inhabitants to their culinary traditions. Reservations are recommended, as places are limited and editions regularly sell out.

A gourmet autumn in Alsace

The Sauerkraut Festival of Ribeauvillé is part of a rich Alsatian autumn calendar celebrating local products: grape harvests, new wine, game, mushrooms, and, of course, sauerkraut. For visitors, it is an opportunity to combine the discovery of this traditional meal with a stroll through the vineyards, visits to winegrowers' cellars, and exploration of Ribeauvillé's medieval heritage, before the magical Christmas market season begins.
