The Tonnerre Christmas Market: The Magic of Arts and Crafts at the Halle Daret
Every year in December, the town of Tonnerre (Yonne, 89700) hosts its Christmas Market at the Halle Daret, on the Halle Daret square, in the heart of the Tonnerre town. This market, distinguished by its focus on arts and crafts, brings together local artisans, creators, and producers from the Tonnerrois and Yonne regions in a festive and warm atmosphere.
Tonnerre is a town of character in the north of the Yonne department, in the heart of a renowned wine-growing area – the Tonnerrois – whose Épineuil and Tonnerre appellations produce white (Chardonnay) and red (Pinot noir) wines appreciated by connoisseurs. The Halle Daret, an emblematic building in the center of Tonnerre, provides an ideal setting for this market, sheltered from the December weather while retaining the charm of a heritage architectural space.
A Market Dedicated to Arts and Crafts
The unique feature of the Tonnerre Christmas Market is its strong commitment to arts and crafts. Exhibitors, selected for the quality and originality of their creations, offer handmade works and objects by professional artisans:
- Ceramics and Pottery: handmade tableware, sculptures, decorative objects in clay, stoneware, and porcelain.
- Jewelry: unique silver, gold, resin, or bead jewelry, pendants, rings, and bracelets.
- Woodworking: carved objects, handmade toys, miniature furniture, kitchen utensils.
- Textiles and Fashion: hand-knitted or hand-woven clothing and accessories, scarves, shawls, handmade bags.
- Illustration and Graphic Arts: prints, original posters, illustrated notebooks, artist postcards.
- Soap Making and Natural Cosmetics: handmade soaps, essential oils, natural creams, and skincare products.
This focus on arts and crafts gives the Tonnerre market a distinctive character, attracting an audience sensitive to quality craftsmanship and eager to find original gifts, far from mass-produced items.
Gastronomy and Flavors of the Tonnerrois
The gastronomic aspect of the Tonnerre Christmas Market highlights the riches of the Tonnerrois and Burgundy terroir. Local producers and food artisans offer their specialties:
- Wines from Tonnerrois: Épineuil (Pinot noir), Tonnerre (Chardonnay), but also Chablis and Bourgogne, emblematic neighboring appellations.
- Cheeses and Dairy Products: farm cheeses, aged regional cheeses.
- Foie Gras and Artisanal Preserves: terrines, confits, rillettes, and pâtés prepared according to tradition.
- Gingerbread, Honeys, and Jams: natural and artisanal products from the Yonne.
- Chocolates and Sweets: pralines, truffles, and chocolate creations for the holidays.
A mulled wine stand and on-site catering options allow visitors to eat and warm up during their visit.

Tonnerre and its Heritage
Tonnerre is a town steeped in history, nestled in a green valley in the north of the Yonne department, at the confluence of the Canal de Bourgogne and the Armançon river. The town is famous for its Hôtel-Dieu, founded in 1293 by Marguerite de Bourgogne, daughter-in-law of Saint Louis, whose great ward (80 m long) is one of the best-preserved in the French Middle Ages.
Tonnerre is also associated with the figure of Charles de Beaumont d'Éon, the famous "Chevalier d'Éon," a diplomat and spy of the 18th century, born in Tonnerre in 1728. The town preserves several remarkable buildings: the church of Saint-Pierre, the remains of the medieval castle, and of course the Fosse Dionne, a karst spring with blue-green waters surrounded by an 18th-century circular washhouse, one of the most photographed natural sites in the Yonne.
Located about 1 hour from Auxerre and 2 hours from Paris via the A6 motorway and the N77, Tonnerre is an ideal stop for a day of discovery in Burgundy, often combined with a visit to the nearby Chablis vineyards.
