From piano concert to spring market: 5 festival outings in Loiret on 8-10 May 2026

From the Joan of Arc festivities in Orléans to a plant swap on the banks of the Loire, with a piano competition and a free travelling festival in between: five ideas for the May 8th weekend.

The May 8th 2026 long weekend lands at just the right moment in Loiret. In Orléans, the Joan of Arc Festival (Fêtes Johanniques) reaches its peak on Friday — the very day Joan of Arc liberated the city in 1429. Around it, an international piano competition, a free pluridisciplinary festival and a gardeners' fair on the banks of the Loire round out a quintessentially Loire-Valley postcard. Here are five suggestions to build a tailor-made weekend, from central Orléans to the edge of Berry.

Fêtes Johanniques in Orléans — the 597th edition peaks on Friday 8 May

This is the event of the département during the long weekend. The Fêtes Johanniques have commemorated, uninterrupted since 1431, the liberation of Orléans by Joan of Arc on 8 May 1429. Listed as Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2018, they run from 29 April to 10 May 2026 and reach their high point right in the middle of the long weekend.

The weekend programme includes a medieval market at the Campo Santo from 7 to 10 May, a sound-and-light show on Sainte-Croix Cathedral, an official procession and the historic horseback ride. This year, Clémence Miot embodies Joan, alongside Martin Paillat and Alexis Horstmann. Most events remain free of charge — a real plus for families who want to soak up the atmosphere without spending much. See the festival page.

Orléans International Piano Competition — the biennial date for contemporary pianists

A short walk from the Joan of Arc festivities, the Orléans International Piano Competition is in full swing. Founded in 1994 by pianist Françoise Thinat, it is the only competition in the world dedicated exclusively to the contemporary repertoire for piano. Recognised by the World Federation of International Music Competitions as an exemplary model, it takes place in the Salle de l'Institut at the Orléans Conservatoire and at the Théâtre d'Orléans.

The 2026 edition explores the theme « Paris 1900-1930: a crossroads of musical innovation ». The set piece is Paréidolie by Michaël Levinas, in world premiere. The final features the French premiere of Thomas Adès's Concerto conciso with the Ensemble intercontemporain. Rounds run from late March through November, with sessions open to the public at 10 € full price and 5 € reduced. Free for under-18s. See the festival page.

Festival Culturissimo — free culture stops by Orléans

Quieter but open to all audiences, the Culturissimo Festival offers another way in. Launched in 2014 by the Espaces Culturels E.Leclerc on Michel-Édouard Leclerc's initiative, this travelling event tours more than 70 cities each spring, including Orléans. Musical readings, concerts, author meet-ups, live performances: around fifty invited artists and writers set the tone for a multidisciplinary lineup.

The vibe is firmly mainstream. The festival aims to bring « culture to everyone », in mid-sized towns as much as in big cities. Everything is free, with some events requiring a reservation. Handy for slipping a reading-concert into a busy weekend in Orléans. See the festival page.

Carnival of Jargeau — the illuminated summer parade strikes in May

Carnival = February in your mind? Jargeau begs to differ. The Carnival of Jargeau, the largest in Loiret and one of the best known in France, extends its festivities into June thanks to a night-time summer parade launched in 2001. This after-dark outing draws over 10,000 spectators each year along the Loire. Running since the 19th century, the carnival picks a different theme every year since 1946 — in 2026, Cult Films inspire the floats.

The atmosphere is unashamedly popular: brass bands, batucadas, confetti battles, funfair. Free entry, programming designed for every generation. A nice way to give kids a taste of the warmer season, in a medieval town that lends itself well to a stroll. See the festival page.

Plants and Seedlings Fair — Beaulieu-sur-Loire goes gardening on Saturday 9 May

For a breath of fresh air, head to the south-east of the département. The Plants and Seedlings Fair takes place on Saturday 9 May 2026 in Beaulieu-sur-Loire, where the Loire meets the Berry region. Organised by the Maison du Terroir et d'Animations, it spreads through the grounds of the Maison Marret and the Place du 11 novembre to celebrate plants in every form.

On the programme: plant and seed swaps, presentations from professional nurseries and horticulturists, a gardening flea market, a botanical exhibit and creative workshops. It is both an educational and a sociable day out, perfect for garden lovers, families and anyone hoping to head home with a few unexpected cuttings. Food on-site, free entry. See the festival page.
