One of the biggest themed carnivals in France, on the banks of the Loire
The Jargeau Carnival is one of the most famous carnivals in France and the largest in the Loiret department. Existing since the 19th century, it has adopted a different theme each year since 1946 to illustrate its floats. The festivities span eight to nine days around Mardi Gras, with two winter parades enlivened by bands, confetti battles, and the burning of King Carnival on the banks of the Loire. Since 2001, an illuminated summer parade has complemented the event, attracting over 10,000 spectators for each outing. Free and open to all.
The Jargeau Carnival is a popular tradition whose origins date back to the 19th century. Since 1946, each edition has adopted a specific theme for the creation of the floats, making this carnival one of the largest themed carnivals in France. Driven by the Jargeau Carnival association and its passionate volunteers, this festive and family-friendly event has gained regional, even national, recognition, with several television reports on national channels.
The festivities begin with the famous Carnival Wake-Ups. For three consecutive Sunday mornings before the parades, future carnival-goers, dressed entirely in white (nicknamed "the Whites"), parade through the streets of Jargeau to the sound of drums to wake up the locals and announce the arrival of King Carnival. The third and final wake-up is the most important: it brings together more participants and extends to the neighboring town of Saint-Denis-de-l'Hôtel.
The two major winter parades are held on the Sundays surrounding Mardi Gras. About ten floats, built on trailers and decorated with paper, paint, and varnish by the association's volunteers, parade through the streets of the town center to the rhythm of bands and batucadas. Hundreds of kilograms of confetti are thrown at the crowd, creating an unforgettable festive atmosphere.
The first outing is traditionally dedicated to satire: carnival-goers reprimand local elected officials for their controversial decisions, in a good-natured, satirical spirit. The day before, a torchlight procession winds through the town streets with the distribution of lanterns starting from the town hall.
At the end of the second outing, at dusk, "the Whites" lead the crowd to the banks of the Loire to witness the spectacular burning of King Carnival's effigy, a powerful and moving moment that concludes the winter carnival.
Since 2001, the Jargeau Carnival has offered a nocturnal summer parade: the same floats are adorned with hundreds of kilometers of light garlands, digitally programmed and synchronized with the music of the bands. This magical spectacle, unique of its kind, is followed by the election of Miss Carnival (a queen and two runners-up for the following year) and a public ball.
The Jargeau Carnival is entirely free and open to all. It attracts over 10,000 spectators per outing when the weather is favorable. A funfair is set up on Boulevard Porte-Madeleine, complemented by refreshments and food stalls on site. Spectators are encouraged to dress up and actively participate in the confetti battles, in the friendly and participatory spirit that makes this carnival renowned.
The Jargeau Carnival 2026 takes place on Sundays, February 15th and 22nd, with the theme "Cult Films". The torchlight procession opens the festivities on Saturday, February 14th. The parades of floats, bands, and confetti battles animate the town center, before the burning of King Carnival's effigy on the banks of the Loire. The Night Carnival is scheduled for June 27th, 2026.
