Our pick of the festivals on the weekend of 8-10 May 2026 in Cher

From the great organ of Bourges Cathedral to Noirlac Abbey, with night-time light walks and a classical festival founded in 1966: seven varied stops to cross the Berry from north to south.

Cher lights up for the 8 May 2026 long weekend. The département is launching several flagship cultural seasons: the Nuits Lumière de Bourges begin their nightly tour, the 40th edition of the Très Riches Heures de l'Orgue starts its Sunday concerts at the cathedral, and the Festival de Boucard opens its 60th year in the Sancerre area. Here are seven picks, from the wine-producing north to the medieval south.

Les Nuits Lumière de Bourges — a night walk through the UNESCO city

Hard to miss this free outing that signals the start of the warm season in Bourges. From 1 May onwards, the Nuits Lumière light up six landmarks in this UNESCO World Heritage city. Saint-Étienne Cathedral, the Palais Jacques-Cœur and several medieval façades are draped in choreographed lighting.

The trail, marked by blue lanterns set into the ground, takes about an hour on foot at nightfall. Ideal after a day spent elsewhere in the département: come back to Bourges for dinner and follow up with the walk. Free, no booking, stroller-friendly. See the festival page.

Les Très Riches Heures de l'Orgue en Berry — a Sunday at the cathedral

On Sunday 10 May at 5 pm, the great organ of Saint-Étienne Cathedral kicks off the 40th season of Les Très Riches Heures de l'Orgue en Berry. For this anniversary opener, the organisation pulls out all the stops: international organists, repertoire that flows from Baroque to contemporary, with spoken commentary to make the listening experience accessible.

The format is simple: free entry, around an hour, no booking. Best to arrive early to enjoy the gothic nave and find a seat with a good view of the instrument. The festival continues every Sunday until 27 September. See the festival page.

Festival de Boucard — 60th year of a Haut-Berry classic

In Le Noyer, in the Sancerre area, the Festival de Boucard is one of the oldest classical music festivals in France, founded in 1966. The 2026 season marks its 60th anniversary. Concerts move between Aubigny-sur-Nère and Sancerre, in Romanesque churches, châteaux and abbeys — venues that are part of the festival's magic.

First concerts of the season from 1 May. Tickets between 10 € and 20 € depending on the night, which is very accessible for international-level classical music. The festival favours young talent and new creation: expect both headliners and discoveries. See the festival page.

Les Matinales de Noirlac — coffee, talk and concert at the abbey

In Bruère-Allichamps, Noirlac Abbey, a 12th-century Cistercian gem, hosts its Matinales all year round. The format: welcome coffee, a talk by a historian, researcher or artist, then a concert and Q&A with the performers. All mid-morning, in the exceptional setting of the cloister.

Free entry or pay-what-you-want. A very different mood from the rest of the weekend: quieter, more contemplative, with a real intellectual dimension. A good idea if you're looking for a morning activity before lunch in the south of Berry. See the festival page.

Concerts at Saint-Genès Church in Châteaumeillant

Further south, in Châteaumeillant, Saint-Genès Church regularly hosts classical music concerts. Remarkable acoustics, programmes ranging from Baroque to 20th-century French music, intimate formats. Check the season calendar as the weekend approaches: a concert sometimes falls on these dates.

The upside: you are far from the crowds, in a village of the southern département that sees few tourists. Combine with a tasting of Châteaumeillant wines, a discreet AOC currently going through a real revival. See the festival page.

Les Rendez-vous DiVin de Mehun-sur-Yèvre — wine at the foot of the castle

In Mehun-sur-Yèvre, 18 km from Bourges, the Rendez-vous DiVin resume their cycle from April to October. On the programme: tastings of Centre-Val de Loire wines, food-and-wine pairings and meet-the-producer sessions, in heritage venues including the famous Charles VII tower, last surviving piece of the royal castle.

The format suits both wine enthusiasts and the simply curious. Prices vary by event. Check the weekend programme before travelling: not every Saturday is active. See the festival page.

Saison Artistique de la Pyramide in Saint-Amand-Montrond

Finally, in the south of the département, the Pyramide des Métiers d'Art in Saint-Amand-Montrond runs its season from October to June. The programming is deliberately eclectic: classical and contemporary theatre, concerts, magic, operetta, cabaret, family shows. Tickets between 8 € and 25 €.

A good way to round off Saturday evening, or for families with kids. Check the exact calendar: the weekend is not always fully covered, but a performance often lands on these dates. See the festival page.
