About Nuits Lumière

The Nuits Lumière de Bourges offer each year, from May to September, a nocturnal and free show-tour through the historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Six heritage sites light up at nightfall thanks to scenographic video projections: Gallo-Roman ramparts, former Archbishop's Palace, Hôtel Lallemant, Estève Museum, École nationale supérieure d'art (ENSA), and Palais Jacques-Cœur. Visitors follow at their own pace the blue lanterns that mark the 2-kilometer circuit, in a city transformed by light. A mascot — Ursine, the blue bear — accompanies the public, notably via the free audio application Legendr.

A free show-tour in the heart of Bourges

Since 2012, the Nuits Lumière de Bourges have transformed the historic center into an open-air theater every summer. At nightfall, six heritage sites in the city center are adorned with scenographic video projections, creating a dreamlike atmosphere between blue lanterns, sculpted facades, and historical narratives. The walk, approximately 2 kilometers long, can be explored freely at one's own pace.

Six heritage sites illuminated

The tour leads the public through different eras, from Gallo-Roman foundations to contemporary creation:

  • The Gallo-Roman ramparts
  • The former Archbishop's Palace
  • The Hôtel Lallemant (masterpiece of the Berruyer Renaissance)
  • The Estève Museum
  • The École nationale supérieure d'art (ENSA)
  • The Palais Jacques-Cœur (a jewel of 15th-century civil architecture)

Other places punctuate the circuit occasionally depending on the season (Hôtel des Postes, Place Cujas in particular).

An experience accessible to all

The show is entirely free and accessible to everyone, without reservation. The free stroll lasts approximately 1h30 and allows both residents and visitors to enjoy the Berruyer heritage in a unique atmosphere. The illuminations automatically turn off at midnight. The free application Legendr (iOS / Android) transforms your smartphone into an interactive guide, accompanied by Ursine, the blue bear mascot of the tour.

Associated activities

Throughout the season, the association Les Amis de Jacques-Cœur offers costumed tours and theatrical readings in front of the scenographies (Fridays of the season and Saturdays of long weekends). Musical strolls punctuate the opening and closing evenings.

A vibrant cultural scene

With approximately 80,000 visitors each season, the Nuits Lumière constitute one of Bourges' cultural highlights. The event is fully integrated into the dynamic of Bourges European Capital of Culture 2028, with contemporary creations associated each year with young artists (notably through the partnership with ENSA Bourges).

The 2026 edition of the Nuits Lumière de Bourges takes place from Thursday, May 7th to Saturday, September 19th, 2026. Official inauguration on May 7th at 9:30 PM on Place Cujas.
