The Green Lentil of Berry: an exceptional product

The Green Lentil of Berry is a flagship product of Berry gastronomy, benefiting from an Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) and a Label Rouge which guarantee its quality and authenticity. Grown in the clay-limestone soils of Berry, particularly around Vatan and in the Champagne berrichonne, this small legume is distinguished by its dark green color, its thin skin, and its quick cooking time. Its delicate, slightly nutty flavor makes it a prized ingredient for chefs and lovers of local cuisine.

A popular festival since 1994

It was in 1994 that the first edition of the Fête de la Lentille Verte du Berry was launched in Vatan, a small town of character located in the heart of the Indre department. The organizers' idea was to celebrate this emblematic local product and introduce the general public to the richness of the Berry region. For over thirty years, this annual event has brought together thousands of visitors every mid-September on the Place de la République and in the streets of Vatan for a weekend of gourmet festivities.

An exceptional farmer's and craft market

The heart of the festival beats around a large farmer's and craft market where dozens of local producers and artisans offer their specialties. Visitors can discover and purchase the new harvest of green lentils, as well as products from the Berry region: goat cheeses, honey, preserves, pâtés, wines from the Reuilly and Valençay appellations, and many other delicacies. Tasting stands allow visitors to savor the lentil in all its forms: in salads, soups, as a side dish, in desserts, and even in beer.

The parade: a highlight of the festival

The grand parade is one of the most anticipated moments of the weekend. Decorated floats parade through the streets of Vatan, accompanied by brass bands, musical groups, and costumed dancers. Each edition has a different theme: in 2025, the carnival theme led to particularly colorful and festive creations. This joyful and popular parade attracts spectators from all over the department and neighboring towns.

Concerts and activities for everyone

Throughout the weekend, musical entertainment enlivens the streets of Vatan with brass bands and itinerant groups. On Sunday afternoon, a free concert by a star artist takes place on the stage in front of the Town Hall, offering a moment of conviviality and sharing. Activities for children, exhibitions, and demonstrations of artisanal know-how complete a program designed for all ages and tastes.
