Music on period instruments at the Empire Theatre of the Château de Valençay
Since 2014, the Festival Talleyrand has celebrated music on period instruments in an exceptional setting: the Empire Theatre of the Château de Valençay, an architectural gem of the Empire style inaugurated on March 30, 1810, with a comic opera by Nicolas Deleyrac. This 100-seat theatre, one of the few remaining castle theatres preserved in their original state, provides an ideal setting for chamber music and recitals on period instruments.
The festival pays homage to Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, the renowned diplomat and statesman who made the Château de Valençay a major center for receptions and culture. Napoleon himself suggested installing a theatre there to entertain members of the Spanish royal family whom he was hosting. True to this spirit, the festival programs works that could have echoed in the salons of Paris and Vienna in the 19th century, blending chamber music, salon opera, and musical theatre.
Each edition unfolds over four weekends between September and October, with concerts on Saturday evenings at 9 PM and Sunday afternoons at 3 PM or 4 PM. The program features early keyboards—pianoforte, harpsichord—and period string instruments, performed by internationally renowned artists. Musicologist lectures enrich some sessions, offering fascinating historical insights into the works performed.
The Festival Talleyrand offers an immersive experience into the 19th century. Visitors can combine a visit to the castle with a concert, and some weekends offer complete packages including a guided tour, musicological lecture, dinner at the Orangery, and concert. The intimate setting of the Empire Theatre, with its original decor, gilding, and draperies, transports the audience into the atmosphere of the musical salons of the imperial era.
The Château de Valençay, a listed historic monument, is one of the most beautiful castles in the Loire Valley, located in Berry. Its architecture blends Renaissance and classical styles, and its French formal gardens extend over 50 hectares. The Empire Theatre, nestled in the heart of the castle, bears witness to the splendor of the diplomatic receptions organized by Talleyrand and is a unique concert venue in France.
The Festival Talleyrand returns for its 13th edition from September to October 2026 at the Empire Theatre of the Château de Valençay. True to its mission, the festival will offer concerts of music on period instruments in this 100-seat Italian-style theatre, a jewel of Berry's heritage.
The full program will be announced in summer 2026 on the Château de Valençay website.
