Jazz festival in Châteauroux-Déols
Organized by the Jazz Club du Berry, the Jazz en Berry festival enlivens the Châteauroux metropolitan area every summer with open-air jazz concerts, live evenings, and jam sessions. Heir to a jazz tradition born in 1966 with the first Jazz Club of Châteauroux, the event offers an eclectic program ranging from swing jazz to be-bop, including gypsy jazz and blues, bringing together regional musicians and renowned national and international guest artists in a friendly and festive atmosphere.
The Jazz en Berry festival is the flagship event of the Jazz Club du Berry, an association founded in 1997 to perpetuate the jazz tradition of Châteauroux, initiated as early as 1966 by the city's first Jazz Club, which was active until 1977. Under the presidency of Michel Magne and thanks to a team of about ten passionate volunteers, the festival keeps jazz alive in the Châteauroux metropolitan area and extends its influence throughout the Indre department.
The Jazz en Berry festival offers a varied program that embraces all facets of jazz: swing, be-bop, gypsy jazz, blues, and many other styles. During July, August, and September, numerous open-air concerts, live evenings, and jam sessions are organized, transforming Châteauroux and Déols into a true jazz crossroads. The concert venue "Claude Luter," inaugurated by the son of the famous clarinetist Eric Luter in January 2024, hosts the performances in a warm and suitable setting.
Each edition brings together talented regional musicians and guest artists of national or even international caliber. Over the years, the festival has hosted swing jazz ensembles, be-bop quartets, gypsy jazz bands, and accomplished bluesmen, offering the Berry public an exceptional showcase of the diversity of live jazz.
The Jazz Club du Berry organizes monthly concerts throughout the year, on the first Monday of each month, attracting over a hundred loyal attendees. The summer festival Jazz en Berry is the highlight of this musical season, with open-air events that draw a large, intergenerational audience. Despite modest resources—the association operates with limited municipal and departmental support—the festival maintains a high standard of artistic quality and fair remuneration for artists.
