Street singers and barrel organs meeting in Villedieu-sur-Indre
Les Goualantes Théopolitaines are the national street singers' gathering organized every autumn in Villedieu-sur-Indre. Created in 2009, this unique event in the Centre-Val de Loire region brings together about forty singers from all over France, accompanied by barrel organs and accordions. The town is adorned with the colors of the Belle Époque with permanent street shows, artisan creators, old games animations, a guinguette, and a memorable cabaret evening.
The Goualantes Théopolitaines were born in 2009 in Villedieu-sur-Indre from a passion for popular street singing. The term "goualante" refers to a popular song or lament, while "théopolitain" is the adjective relating to Villedieu (the "city of God"). Every year in early October, about forty street singers from all over France sing their goualantes in the streets of the town, accompanied by barrel organs, accordions, or the public singing along to the refrains of popular songs.
Les Goualantes Théopolitaines are recognized by street singers as one of the most important national events. This annual meeting has become essential for fans of realistic street singing, guinguette music, and French popular musical heritage.
For a weekend, the center of Villedieu-sur-Indre is transformed and adorned with the colors of the Belle Époque. Permanent street performances animate the squares and alleys, while nearly 70 exhibitors—artisan creators, local producers—showcase their skills. The activities highlight old games, horse rides, and the conviviality of an outdoor guinguette.
The highlight of the festival is the cabaret evening on Saturday night, an enchanting moment where street singers gather in an intimate and warm atmosphere around a catered meal. Memorable concerts are also held in the village hall and the church of Villedieu.
The organization of Les Goualantes Théopolitaines relies on the mobilization of dozens of volunteers from the local associations, coordinated by Villedieu Animations and the municipality. This collective momentum makes the event a true moment of sharing and pride for the entire commune.
