The spirit of the 'goualante'
A 'goualante' is a traditional French folk song or ballad, while 'théopolitain' is the demonym for the residents of Villedieu-sur-Indre, the 'City of God'. Every October, street singers from all over France fill the town's streets with their songs, accompanied by barrel organs, accordions, and a crowd that loves to join in on the choruses.
A weekend in the heart of town
The streets come alive with constant entertainment. Alongside the singers, you will find organ grinders, accordionists, street painters, artisans, and craftspeople, as well as demonstrations of traditional trades, exhibitions, and a local market. The program also features vintage games and horse-drawn carriage rides, with a lively guinguette set up along the banks of the Trégonce.
The cabaret evening
On Saturday night, a cabaret dinner brings the performers together for a catered meal (reservations required). Booking forms are available on the Les Goualantes Théopolitaines Facebook page. Concerts are also held at the village hall and the local church.
