The traditional icy swim on January 1st on the beach of Le Touquet-Paris-Plage
The New Year's Swim of Le Touquet is a traditional and friendly event that brings together the bravest on January 1st on the beach of Le Touquet-Paris-Plage for a dip in the cool waters of the English Channel. Meet at 11:30 AM at the Centre Nautique de la Manche Bertrand Lambert for this refreshing ritual that marks the transition to the new year. Costumes, good humor, and solidarity are on the agenda for this moment of sharing, which attracts more and more participants each year, from cold-weather regulars to one-day daredevils, in a festive and quirky atmosphere.
Every January 1st, while many are recovering from New Year's Eve, hundreds of brave souls converge on the beach of Le Touquet-Paris-Plage for the traditional New Year's Swim. This winter ritual, which has become a true institution on the Côte d'Opale, consists of throwing oneself into the icy waters of the English Channel to celebrate the new year in an original and invigorating way.
The meeting is set for 11:30 AM at the Centre Nautique de la Manche Bertrand Lambert. Participants, often in swimsuits or fancy costumes, gather on the beach before running together towards the waves. The water temperature, rarely above 8-10°C in mid-winter, adds to the challenge and adrenaline of this collective plunge.
One of the charms of the New Year's Swim is the creativity of the participants, who compete in imagination with their costumes. Superheroes, fairytale characters, quirky outfits, and improbable attire mingle on the beach, adding a touch of humor and fantasy to the event. The atmosphere is resolutely festive and good-natured, with laughter, cheers, and mutual encouragement.
The New Year's Swim of Le Touquet is part of a broader tradition of winter swims practiced on the coast of the Côte d'Opale and Northern France. From Dunkirk to Le Touquet, several towns organize their own New Year's swim, but Le Touquet's remains one of the most popular and publicized, attracting participants from all over the region.
A prestigious seaside resort, Le Touquet-Paris-Plage is not lacking in charm in winter. Its vast sandy beach, pine forest, Art Deco villas, and covered market offer an exceptional setting to start the year. The New Year's Swim is part of the resort's end-of-year festivities, which also include the traditional "Si Le Touquet m'était conté" program with its illuminations and Christmas market.
Beyond the physical challenge, the New Year's Swim is above all a moment of sharing and solidarity. Cold-weather regulars, athletes, families, and one-day daredevils come together with a common desire: to start the year with a strong symbolic gesture, a plunge that marks the break with the past year and the joyful welcome of the next. After the swim, hot drinks and conviviality warm up the participants.
The New Year's Swim returns on January 1st, 2027, at the Centre Nautique Bertrand Lambert in Le Touquet-Paris-Plage for another dip in the English Channel.
