Celebration of glass art and crystal in Bayel, City of Crystal
The history of Bayel is inseparable from that of crystal. In 1666, the Venetian master glassmaker Jean-Baptiste Mazzolay obtained authorization from King Louis XIV to found a crystal factory in this village in the Cote des Bar region. The Cristallerie Royale de Champagne (Royal Crystal Factory of Champagne) thus created became one of the most prestigious in France, producing exceptional pieces for over three centuries—decanters, glasses, chandeliers, art objects—that adorned royal tables and aristocratic homes. Although industrial production has ceased, the spirit of crystal continues to live on in Bayel thanks to the Musee du Cristal (Crystal Museum) and its blowing workshop, where master glassmaker Manolo Rodriguez perpetuates ancestral techniques.
Every year in August, the Fete du Verre transforms the courtyard of the former factory into a true artisan village. Visitors can attend glass blowing demonstrations by master glassmaker Manolo Rodriguez, observe the meticulous work of cutting and engraving crystal by Henri Piubello, discover glass painting with Claudie Lanoux, and admire the work of stained glass and forging. A market of glass artisans allows visitors to purchase unique pieces created before their eyes.
Beyond the craft demonstrations, the Fete du Verre is an opportunity to discover the industrial heritage of Bayel. The Musee du Cristal traces the history of glass and crystal from antiquity to the present day, showcasing collections of historical pieces from the Cristallerie Royale. Guided tours of the former factory workshops provide insight into the manufacturing techniques that made Bayel famous. The photographic exhibition "Bayel hors les murs" by Jean-Philippe Pagniez offers a contemporary perspective on this exceptional industrial heritage.
Organized by the Association Patrimoine et Culture de Bayel (APCB), chaired by Monique Varennes, the Fete du Verre is a friendly, family-oriented event, open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with free admission. The artisan market, set up in the historic courtyard of the factory, also offers on-site catering and a refreshment stand. The event benefits from the support of the municipality of Bayel, the Musee du Cristal, and the Cite du Vitrail in Troyes, testifying to the deep-rooted glassmaking tradition in the Aube department.
The Fete du Verre celebrates its 10th edition on Sunday, August 23, 2026, in the courtyard of the former Manufacture Royale de Cristal de Champagne in Bayel. This anniversary edition promises an enriched program to celebrate ten years of showcasing the Aube region's glass heritage.
On the program: demonstrations of glass blowing, crystal cutting and engraving, glass painting, stained glass, a market of glass artisans, guided tours of the Musee du Cristal and the former workshops. Free admission from 10 AM to 6 PM. The Cristallerie Royale, founded in 1666, will celebrate its 360th anniversary.
Free admission.
