Napoleonic historical reenactment in the UNESCO-listed Vauban fortifications
Every two years, in September, the moats and ramparts of the fortified town of Neuf-Brisach host the Bivouac Napoléonien, a major historical reenactment of the Napoleonic army. Nearly two hundred reenactors from France and Germany set up their camp in the Vauban fortifications for a weekend of immersion: infantry maneuvers, artillery and cavalry demonstrations, reenactment of a Napoleonic attack, period market, parade on the Place d'Armes, and nocturnal bivouac around a campfire.
The Bivouac Napoléonien de Neuf-Brisach is one of the most spectacular historical reenactments in Alsace. Every two years, in September, nearly two hundred Napoleonic soldiers take over the stronghold of Neuf-Brisach, a masterpiece by Vauban and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The moats of the Porte de Strasbourg, the star-shaped ramparts, and the demi-lunes provide a strikingly realistic backdrop for this two-century flashback to the era of the Grande Armée.
Participants, from French and German historical reenactment associations, arrive in meticulously crafted period costumes. Old Guards, grenadiers, chasseurs à cheval, artillerymen, and vivandières set up their bivouac in the moats of the citadel, faithfully recreating the daily life of a Napoleonic military camp. Campaign tents, wood fires, cooking pots, and period equipment create a remarkably authentic atmosphere that transports visitors to the early 19th century.
The highlight of the Bivouac Napoléonien is the reenactment of a Napoleonic attack, scheduled for Saturday afternoon. The troops perform infantry maneuvers, blank artillery fire, and cavalry charges in the citadel's moats, near the Vauban canal at the Porte de Colmar. The roar of cannons echoes between the ramparts, offering an impressive and educational spectacle. Throughout Saturday, demonstrations of military exercises, weapons handling, and Napoleonic tactics punctuate the program.
A Napoleonic market is set up within the ramparts starting Saturday morning, offering period crafts, military replicas, history books, and souvenirs. On Sunday morning at 10:30 AM, a grand military parade crosses the Place d'Armes: troops in full uniform march to the sound of drums and fifes before continuing their procession through the town's streets. This parade is a particularly photogenic and moving moment, recalling the military history of this Rhine stronghold.
On Saturday evening, the bivouac remains accessible to visitors for a particularly atmospheric night visit. Campfires illuminate the citadel's moats as reenactors share their passion over period meals. This nocturnal immersion in the Napoleonic camp, with the silhouettes of the ramparts against the night sky, offers a unique and memorable experience. Food is available on-site on Saturday and Sunday.
The Bivouac Napoléonien returns in September 2026 to the Neuf-Brisach fortifications.
