One of the largest carnivals in Eastern France
The Carnaval d'Hagondange is one of the most important carnivals in Eastern France, attracting around 40,000 people to each edition. Created in 1985 by the Société Carnavalesque d'Hagondange in collaboration with the municipality, this festive event takes place every year in April with a grand international parade, dozens of decorated floats, brass bands, costumed groups from France and abroad, a Queen of the Carnival ball, and a children's carnival. It is a must-attend event in Moselle's festive life.
The Carnaval d'Hagondange was born in 1985 from the desire of the Société Carnavalesque and the municipality to create a major popular festive event in this town in the Fensch valley. In four decades, it has become one of the largest carnivals in Eastern France, rivaling the most prestigious parades in the region.
The highlight of the carnival is the Grande Cavalcade Internationale, a spectacular procession that winds through the streets of Hagondange on Sunday afternoon. Dozens of decorated floats, designed by local and international associations and carnival groups, parade to the rhythm of brass bands and street orchestras. Approximately 1,500 costumed participants take part in the procession, creating a colorful spectacle that delights the thousands of spectators gathered along the route.
The carnival hosts delegations from France and abroad each year. The official opening ceremony, held on Saturday morning at the Town Hall, brings together representatives from the various delegations for the handover of the city keys by the Mayor. This solemn and joyful moment marks the official start of the festivities.
On Sunday afternoon, before the grand parade, a carnival specifically for children is organized Place Jean Burger. The youngest participants parade in their colorful costumes, take part in games and activities, in a joyful and welcoming atmosphere. It's an opportunity for families to experience the carnival together.
On Saturday evening, the Grand Bal de la Reine du Carnaval brings together carnival-goers in a festive atmosphere. The election of the Carnival Queen, dances, and live music make this evening a memorable occasion. It's also an opportunity to discover the most original and elaborate costumes of the edition.
With approximately 40,000 spectators at each edition, the Carnaval d'Hagondange is a formidable social connector and a source of local pride. It mobilizes hundreds of volunteers, local associations, and unites residents around a joyful collective project. The carnival also contributes to the tourist appeal of the town and the Fensch valley.
