Old-fashioned harvests and agricultural heritage in the Ardennes village of Lançon
The Fête de la Moisson de Lançon is an annual gathering dedicated to traditional agricultural heritage, organized on the first weekend of August by the association La Seconde Vie du Matériel in the small village of Lançon, near Grandpré, in the Ardennes. The event features demonstrations of old-fashioned harvesting, threshing with flails and mechanical threshers, plowing by Ardennes horses, as well as an exhibition of over a hundred tractors and agricultural machines from the 1930s to the 1970s, all fully restored by passionate volunteers. Admission is free.
The Fête de la Moisson de Lançon transports its visitors to the agricultural world of yesterday, in the heart of a small Ardennes village of forty inhabitants nestled near Grandpré. Every first weekend of August, the association La Seconde Vie du Matériel organizes this original event that revives the gestures and know-how of traditional harvests. In the fields around the village, visitors witness life-size demonstrations of scything, sheaf binding, threshing with flails, and harvesting with a mechanical thresher, just like in our great-grandparents' time.
The highlight of the show is the impressive exhibition of old agricultural equipment: over a hundred machines dating from the 1930s to the 1970s, patiently restored by the association's volunteers, are presented in working order. Vintage tractors of all brands, combine harvesters, belt threshers, horse-drawn mowers, and other rural tools parade and work before the amazed eyes of the public. Each machine tells a page of Ardennes agricultural history, from animal traction to the progressive mechanization of the countryside.
The Fête de la Moisson gives pride of place to Ardennes horses, the emblematic draft breed of the department. Plowing demonstrations with horses are organized, recalling the time when these powerful animals were the indispensable companions of farmers. Hitches pull plows, harrows, and carts in the surrounding plots, offering a spectacle that is both powerful and moving. Children can get up close to the horses and discover the work of the land as it was practiced in the mid-20th century.
Beyond the demonstrations, the Fête de la Moisson is a moment of village conviviality. A catering area offers Ardennes regional specialties: grills, potée (a traditional stew), fruit tarts, and local drinks. The association's volunteers warmly welcome visitors and share their passion for rural heritage. The atmosphere is that of an authentic village festival, far from large commercial events, where vintage tractor enthusiasts, families seeking discovery, and lovers of the rural world come together.
Founded in 2010 and based at 14 rue du Château in Lançon, the association La Seconde Vie du Matériel aims to animate and promote the rural world of yesterday and today. Its volunteers restore old agricultural machinery throughout the year and organize events around rural heritage: harvest festivals, parts exchange fairs, exhibitions, and tractor parades. The Fête de la Moisson de Lançon is their flagship event, attracting visitors from across the department and beyond each year.
The festival takes place in and around the village of Lançon (08250), near Grandpré.
