The great carnival parade of Northern Alsace
The Carnaval d'Haguenau animates the streets of this former imperial city each year to the rhythm of brass bands, colorful floats, and extravagant costumes. True to Alsatian carnival traditions, this popular family event culminates with the grand parade in the historic center and ends with the burning of the witch in Place de la Wacht, a symbol of bidding farewell to winter and welcoming spring.
Haguenau, a former imperial residence of the Hohenstaufen dynasty, fervently upholds the tradition of the Alsatian carnival. Each year, the fourth largest city in Alsace ignites to the rhythm of brass bands, drums, and laughter, transforming its medieval streets into a vibrant spectacle. The Carnaval d'Haguenau is part of the rich tradition of Alsatian parades, these festive processions that chase away winter and celebrate the arrival of warmer days.
The highlight of the carnival is the grand parade that winds through the streets of the city center. Dozens of costumed groups, from Haguenau and surrounding villages, march with their decorated floats in an atmosphere of popular jubilation. Brass bands, Guggenmusik, and entertainment groups turn every intersection into a performance stage. Themes vary from year to year, blending humor, social satire, and unbridled creativity.
The carnival traditionally unfolds over a full weekend:
The carnival concludes with an ancestral ritual: the burning of the witch (Hexeverbrennung), held at Place de la Wacht at 6 PM. This symbolic moment, accompanied by a final brass band performance, marks the end of the carnival season and the farewell to winter. The flames carry away the evil spirits, promising a radiant spring.
Nestled at the foot of France's largest undivided forest, Haguenau offers a remarkable heritage setting for its festivities. The half-timbered houses, the Saint-Georges church, and the historic squares create an authentic backdrop that enhances the carnival atmosphere. The carnival adds to an already dense event calendar, which notably includes the famous Christmas Market and the Hop Festival.
