Ihauteria, the Basque Carnival

The Hasparren Carnival, known by its Basque name Ihauteria Hazparne, is part of the rich tradition of Basque carnivals (ihauteriak) that liven up the villages of the Basque Country from January to April. Organized by Ezkia Ikastola, the Basque school of Hasparren, this carnival is a moment of cultural transmission and popular celebration that brings together all generations of the community.

The Carnival Parade

The highlight of the carnival is the grand parade that winds through the streets of Hasparren's town center. The procession gathers at Place du Labourd before setting off in a joyful procession. Participants, in costume and makeup, form a colorful and noisy procession that transforms the usually quiet streets into a theater of celebration and fantasy.

Joaldunak and Carnival Traditions

The joaldunak, these traditional characters carrying heavy bells (joareak) attached to their backs, set the pace of the parade with their powerful and hypnotic sound. Their presence anchors the carnival in the pastoral and rural traditions of the Basque Country. Traditional Basque dances accompany the procession, while the giants (erraldoiak) tower over the crowd with their imposing stature.

Music and Camaraderie

The Zortski group provides the musical entertainment for the parade, drawing the crowd into a festive and dancing atmosphere. Bandas and txarangas complete the musical accompaniment. After the parade, the festivities continue in the town center's bars and restaurants, where Basque camaraderie finds its full expression.

Santibate, an Extension of the Carnival

The Hasparren carnival continues with Santibate, a ritual event linked to the carnival cycle. This special evening offers entertainment in all the bars of the town center, providing a festive nocturnal carnival experience that complements the afternoon festivities.
