A Carnival Tradition in the Heart of Sedan

The Carnaval de Sedan is one of the great festive traditions of the Ardennes city. Every year in March, the city comes alive to the rhythm of brass bands, confetti, and costumed parades. This popular festival, deeply rooted in local life, brings together thousands of Sedanais and visitors from across the department and neighboring Belgium to celebrate the arrival of spring and the Ardennes joie de vivre together.

A Spectacular Parade in the Medieval City

The highlight of the carnival is the grand parade that crosses the streets of the medieval city of Sedan. Allegorical floats, carefully built by the city's associations and neighborhoods, parade amidst a jubilant crowd. Brass bands, batucadas, dance groups, and costumed characters accompany the procession in a riot of colors, music, and good cheer. Children and adults alike join in the spirit of dressing up, and confetti flies through the air along the entire route.

The Burning of the Effigy: A Centuries-Old Tradition

The Carnaval de Sedan perpetuates the tradition of the burning of the effigy, an ancient carnival rite that symbolizes the end of winter and the renewal of spring. At nightfall, at the foot of the walls of the Fortified Castle, the effigy is delivered to the flames to the cheers of the crowd. This significant and symbolic moment is followed by a popular open-air ball that extends the celebration late into the evening, with live music and a festive atmosphere.

The Carnaval de Sedan is organized by the Comité Associatif du Carnaval de Sedan, a cultural and leisure association based on Avenue du Général Margueritte. Dozens of passionate volunteers, year after year, prepare the floats, coordinate the parade, and ensure the smooth running of the festival. Their commitment makes the carnival a unifying, free, and open event for all, contributing to Sedan's festive identity and the dynamism of associative life in the Ardennes.
