An Ardennes Carnival Tradition

The Carnaval du Feu des Buires is one of the most emblematic carnivals in the Ardennes department. Every spring, the commune of Signy-l'Abbaye comes alive for a festive and popular weekend. The carnival's name refers to the 'buires', traditional straw torches burned in a ceremony symbolizing the end of winter and the renewal of spring, an ancestral custom of the Ardennes region.

A Festive Program for the Whole Family

The carnival offers a rich and varied program throughout the weekend. On Saturday evening, a grand costume ball kicks off the festivities in the Signy-l'Abbaye village hall. On Sunday, the village comes alive with an egg hunt for children, a costume contest for children and adults, a parade of floats and costumed groups through the village streets, accompanied by brass bands and musical entertainment.

Le Feu des Buires: A Moment of Community

The highlight of the carnival is the ceremonial burning of the 'buires', a moment of community where the entire village gathers around the fire. This tradition, passed down through generations, symbolizes the transition from winter to spring and carries wishes for prosperity for the new season. The giant omelette, prepared and shared in the village square, completes this picture of Ardennes conviviality.

An Event Driven by Volunteers

The association Le Feu des Buires, created to organize and perpetuate the Signy-l'Abbaye carnival, relies on a team of dedicated volunteers. Based at La Vieille Route de Thin, the association works year-round preparing floats, costumes, and entertainment. The carnival is a free and open-to-all event that contributes to the dynamism of local life and the rayonnement of Ardennes popular culture.
