Auvergne's First Medieval Fantasy Festival in Billom
Charivari is Auvergne's first medieval fantasy festival, held every late August in the medieval quarter of Billom. Free and open to all, this festival offers fire shows, juggling, storytelling, medieval dances, Celtic folk concerts, and fantasy entertainment in the historic streets of the medieval town. Supported by the Billom Renaissance association, it celebrates its 22nd edition in 2025.
Every late August, Charivari transforms the medieval quarter of Billom into a universe populated by fantastic creatures, fire jugglers, and minstrels. As Auvergne's first medieval fantasy festival, this free, family-friendly event has, over its editions, created a unique atmosphere, blending historical reenactment with fantastic imagination.
The word "charivari" originates from a medieval ritual: from the 14th century onwards, masked villagers would gather to make noise and create festive disorder. The festival embraces this spirit of popular celebration and joyful transgression, adding a fantasy dimension that transports visitors to a world where the real and the imaginary merge.
Charivari offers two days of varied entertainment in the historic streets of Billom:
The choice of Billom as the festival location is natural: this small town in the Puy-de-Dôme boasts a remarkable medieval quarter with its half-timbered houses, cobbled streets, and preserved architectural heritage. The streets and squares of the historic center become the natural backdrop for shows and entertainment, creating total immersion in the medieval world.
Supported by the association Billom Renaissance, Charivari is an entirely free event, open to everyone. This accessibility is part of the festival's DNA, aiming to be a moment of sharing and conviviality for families and fans of medieval and fantasy worlds.
Since its 9th edition, Charivari has been accompanied by Chariva'livre, a book fair dedicated to fantasy literature. Visitors can meet authors, discover new literary universes, and leave with signed books.
The 23rd edition of Charivari will take place on August 29th and 30th, 2026, in the medieval quarter of Billom. Two days of fire shows, juggling, storytelling, medieval dances, Celtic folk concerts, and the Chariva'livre fantasy book fair. Free admission.
Charivari returns for its 23rd edition on August 29th and 30th, 2026, in the medieval quarter of Billom. As every year, the festival will feature fire shows, juggling, storytelling, medieval dances, and Celtic folk concerts.
The Chariva'livre, a fantasy book fair, will accompany the festival for its 10th edition.
